Job Title: Stepdown RN Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: PCU RN Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Yes Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Driver's license required Description: RN's must pass a pass/fail exam on Friday during orientation. The exam is open book, covering skills learned, with all necessary resources provided to ensure passing. A minimum score of 90% is required to pass. Artificial nails are prohibited in all departments providing patient care. Refusal to remove them will lead to termination of contract. This unit has 22 beds with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4. Common diagnoses include heart failure, Afib, respiratory distress, and stroke. RNs are required to titrate drips, with common titratable and set rate drips including Cardizem, amiodarone, and nitro. A charge nurse is present on each shift and takes a full patient assignment. Patient care techs are available on this unit, with a ratio of 1 tech for every 10 patients. RNs are required to read and interpret telemetry strips. Shifts are cyclic, running from 0630 to 1900 and 1830 to 0700. Weekend requirements are every other weekend, with holiday requirements of 1 major and 1 minor holiday. Floating to ICU is required if appropriate and if the RN has experience. The unit is fast-paced with many admits and discharges. Attributes that help make a nurse successful in this department include a positive attitude, teamwork, and a patient-oriented approach. All requests for time off must be submitted upfront, and additional requests will not be approved. Cancellations can occur up to 4 shifts for 13-week assignments and up to 3 shifts for shorter assignments. The charting system used is EPIC.
