Job Description

Job Title: Refrigeration Construction Superintendent Job Description

This role leads field operations for large-scale refrigeration projects at multiple distribution facilities, ensuring they are built safely, on schedule, and in strict accordance with drawings and specifications. The Superintendent oversees all refrigeration-related work, including main compressors and extensive stainless and copper piping, while coordinating a field crew and subcontractors on complex projects valued up to $10 million. This position offers the opportunity to manage long-duration projects, collaborate closely with project management, and maintain high standards of quality, safety, and client satisfaction.

Responsibilities
  • Lead field operations for large refrigeration construction projects, including main compressors, stainless steel piping, copper piping, and related systems.
  • Ensure the project is built in accordance with contract drawings, specifications, and quality standards while maintaining job site safety at all times.
  • Identify job site facility requirements and work with the Project Manager to acquire necessary assets and resources for field operations.
  • Establish and maintain job site security as required by project conditions and client expectations.
  • Contact local building and permitting officials and establish parameters for inspections, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Receive all contract documents, maintain organized onsite files, and ensure that all field personnel have access to current drawings and specifications.
  • Review contract documents for practicality and constructability and communicate any deficiencies or conflicts to the Project Manager for resolution.
  • Work with the Project Manager in the selection of subcontractors and suppliers, providing input on capabilities, performance, and project fit.
  • Conduct start-up meetings with all subcontractors to review scope of work, safety expectations, project schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Monitor purchasing and delivery schedules to ensure materials, equipment, and supplies arrive on time to support the construction schedule.
  • Develop and monitor short-term schedules to align daily and weekly field activities with the overall project schedule.
  • Conduct weekly progress meetings with the Project Manager and subcontractors to review progress, address issues, and adjust plans as needed.
  • Coordinate activities of all on-site subcontractors and crew members to ensure efficient operation and minimize conflicts in the field.
  • Regularly monitor job site activities to verify adherence to schedule, quality requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Review all submittals and shop drawings to verify compliance with project specifications and contract drawings before installation.
  • Establish and enforce an on-site loss control program in conformance with corporate loss control guidelines.
  • Conduct jobsite safety inspections at least once per week, complete Jobsite Safety Checklists, and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Address safety concerns during regular progress meetings with subcontractors and onsite personnel, reinforcing safety expectations.
  • Complete reports on all loss control incidents promptly and submit them immediately, then investigate thoroughly to prevent recurrence.
  • Ensure all work is completed in accordance with the site-specific safety plan and the corporate safety plan.
  • Support the Project Manager during subcontractor bidding and award stages to ensure prospective subcontractors understand quality requirements.
  • Conduct pre-startup meetings with subcontractors and project management to outline quality expectations and project procedures.
  • Verify that installed work conforms to contract documents, project specifications, and quality standards.
  • Confirm that insurance coverage is in place before any subcontractor mobilizes to the job site.
  • Complete quality checklists daily on all work in progress to document compliance and identify issues early.
  • Coordinate the activities of independent testing laboratories and ensure they understand project requirements and schedules.
  • Receive and review subcontractors’ daily inspection reports to verify accuracy and compliance with project standards.
  • Conduct inspections of work as it nears completion, prepare punch lists, and issue them to subcontractors for timely completion.
  • Oversee final inspections and sign-offs related to insulated metal panels (IMP) and other key refrigeration components.
  • Complete and transmit daily construction reports to the Project Manager, accurately documenting manpower, progress, issues, and delays.
  • Prepare and immediately transmit incident reports and subcontractor accident reports to the Project Manager, Director of Construction, and Chief Operations Officer as required.
  • Verify that signed subcontracts, bonds (if required), and insurance certificates are in place before subcontractors begin work on the project.
  • Issue meeting minutes for weekly subcontractor meetings and distribute them to the project team to ensure alignment and accountability.
  • Maintain professional client interaction on site, providing updates, addressing concerns, and representing the project team effectively.
  • Manage and mentor a field crew of approximately 12 team members, providing leadership, direction, and support throughout the project.
  • Adapt to changing project locations and schedules, including potential shadowing or onboarding at other active project sites.
Essential Skills
  • Previous experience as a Refrigeration Superintendent or Foreman on large-scale refrigeration projects.
  • Proven experience working on refrigeration projects with field crews of 10 or more team members.
  • Experience managing or contributing to projects with refrigeration scopes up to approximately $10 million.
  • Strong construction management skills, including field coordination, scheduling, and subcontractor oversight.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, for communication, documentation, and reporting.
  • Experience using Procore or similar construction management software to run and track construction schedules.
  • Demonstrated safety oversight experience, including OSHA 30 training or equivalent, and active involvement in jobsite safety programs.
  • Ability to manage client interactions professionally and maintain strong working relationships with owners, consultants, and inspectors.
  • Hands-on experience in refrigeration-related construction, including compressors and piping systems (stainless and copper).
  • Capability to work effectively in both warm and cold temperature environments, including refrigerated spaces and outdoor conditions.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage documents, reports, inspections, and field communications.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate multiple subcontractors and trades on a busy job site.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for meetings, reports, and coordination with project stakeholders.
  • Commitment to enforcing safety, quality, and schedule requirements consistently across the project.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Prior experience delivering large industrial or distribution center projects, particularly involving complex refrigeration systems.
  • Experience working with building officials, inspectors, and permitting authorities to coordinate inspections and approvals.
  • Familiarity with loss control programs and incident reporting processes in a construction environment.
  • Experience conducting and documenting weekly progress meetings and subcontractor coordination sessions.
  • Ability to interpret and review submittals, shop drawings, and specifications for constructability and compliance.
  • Comfort working on long-duration projects, typically around six months per site, with potential for consecutive assignments.
  • Willingness to travel to different project locations as needed and adapt to varying site conditions and schedules.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address constructability issues, schedule conflicts, and field challenges in real time.
Work Environment

This role is based on large-scale distribution center construction sites focused on refrigeration systems. Projects typically last around six months, with initial assignments including major distribution centers near airport locations, and may involve short-term shadowing at other active projects. The Superintendent works in a field environment that includes both warm outdoor conditions and cold interior spaces associated with refrigeration systems. The project team includes approximately 12 onsite crew members, along with multiple subcontractors and testing agencies. Average working hours are around 50 per week, with some weeks requiring fewer or more hours depending on project demands, and the potential to work up to six days per week. The position operates within a structured construction management environment that uses tools such as Procore and Microsoft Office for scheduling, documentation, and communication. The work setting emphasizes strict adherence to safety programs, including OSHA-based practices and corporate safety plans, with regular safety inspections and meetings. Travel and temporary lodging may be required for project assignments, with support provided for per diem and flight reimbursement. The dress environment aligns with typical industrial construction standards, requiring appropriate field attire and personal protective equipment suitable for both warm and cold conditions on site.
