Special Agent (Reemployed Annuitant) Investigations Division

Position Overview The United States Capitol Police (USCP) safeguards Congress, its members, employees, visitors, and Congressional buildings and grounds from crime, disruption, and terrorism. USCP protects and secures Congress so it can fulfill its constitutional and legislative responsibilities in a safe, secure, and open environment. Eligibility Requirements Completion of the FLETC Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP), USCP Basic Agent Training Program (BATP), or an equivalent training program from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), or U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with transcript or certificate included in application. Five (5) years of experience in the 1811 series at the time of application. This requirement is waived for prior USCP employees. U.S. citizenship; evidence of citizenship must be provided early in the selection process. Age not exceeding 58 years at the time of appointment, unless a waiver applies. High School diploma or GED certificate. Valid REAL ID U.S. driver's license that has not been revoked or suspended in the past 12 months. Clean driving record in the last 12 months. Male applicants must be registered with the Selective Service System (female applicants are exempt). Qualified criminal history check covering the last 10 years. Successful credit check; no default or delinquent federal guaranteed student loans. Proficiency in firearm and ammunition possession; applicants convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence are ineligible. Full and unrestricted duty status at the time of application and appointment. Application Process Phases Initial Assessment Phase – virtual orientation and overview of USCP and hiring process. Examination Phase Psychological Examination – a 4–6 hour battery of assessments and a clinical interview conducted online using a desktop or laptop, camera, and microphone. Candidates should be well‑rested and have eaten beforehand. Medical Examination – evaluates medical fitness for the functional requirements of the job. Candidates must fast prior to the examination. Polygraph Examination – confirms information gathered during the selection process. Background Investigation – includes full background review, verification of employment history, residential and personal references, in‑depth criminal and credit history, and academic records. This also covers a full field background investigation, polygraph, criminal, credit, and tax checks. Training Completion – candidates must successfully complete all required training and a probationary period. Medical and Examination Waivers Medical examinations are waived for eligible sworn reemployed annuitants who have retired from USCP or another law enforcement agency within the past three years, unless removed due to a medical fitness evaluation. Sworn USCP employees who retired no more than 12 months prior to application are waived from completing psychological and polygraph examinations. Additional Requirements Travel for hiring assessments and training is at applicant's expense. Fingerprint check will be submitted to the FBI for a criminal history record.
