This role is ideal for an engineer who is passionate about civil and water/wastewater infrastructure design and is interested in progressing toward a project management track. You’ll play a key technical role on multidisciplinary teams delivering complex municipal and utility projects throughout New England and across the U.S.Our Boston team supports clients with innovative, practical solutions for water and wastewater treatment, conveyance systems, stormwater management, and site infrastructure. Position Summary:The Project Engineer (Civil PE) is responsible for supporting the technical delivery of water, wastewater, and civil infrastructure projects from design through construction. This role focuses on performing engineering analyses, developing design documents, and ensuring accuracy and quality across project deliverables.Essential Functions:Support the planning and design of water/wastewater treatment, distribution/conveyance, and pumping systemsPerform hydraulic calculations, pipe and equipment sizing, and detailed civil designPrepare construction documents including drawings, technical specifications, reports, and cost estimatesCollaborate with senior engineers and project managers to ensure design quality and technical accuracyReview contractor submittals and respond to RFIs during construction phasesAssist with site visits, field investigations, and occasional construction observationWork closely with CAD designers, junior engineers, and other technical staffGain exposure to task management and client interaction to grow toward a PM roleRequired Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering Professional Engineer (PE) license5+ years of relevant experience in civil infrastructure or water/wastewater projectsStrong technical background in one or more of the following: site grading, utilities, hydraulics, treatment processes, or stormwater systemsProficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D; familiarity with Revit, InfoWater/InfoWorks, or similar tools is a plusSolid written and verbal communication skillsValid driver’s license and ability to travel (~15%) to project sites and client meetingsPhysical Requirements:Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer and performing design tasksFrequent use of hands and fingers to operate a computer, keyboard, and engineering softwareAbility to read, analyze, and interpret detailed engineering drawings, plans, and specificationsAbility to stand, walk, and navigate active project or construction sites during field visitsAbility to occasionally lift or carry light materials (up to 25 pounds) such as field equipment or documentsVisual acuity to review technical data, drawings, and digital modelsAbility to travel to project sites and perform fieldwork activities as neededWork Environment / Environmental Factors:Hybrid office environment with a combination of in-office and field-based workWork performed primarily in a professional office setting with standard engineering tools and softwarePeriodic site visits to construction sites, treatment facilities, or outdoor environmentsExposure to varying weather conditions during fieldworkPotential exposure to construction-related conditions including noise, dust, and uneven terrainUse of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required during site visitsFast-paced, project-driven environment with multiple deadlines and prioritiesCollaboration with multidisciplinary teams across offices and geographic regionsSalary dependent on experience: $104,000 to $124,800Life at Tetra Tech:The perks of working at Tetra Tech include:Comprehensive and market-competitive benefits.Merit-based financial rewards.Flexibility and company-wide commitment to work/life balance.Collaborative team atmosphere that values the contributions of all employees.Learning and development opportunities for ongoing professional growth.
