Emergency Medical Technician

The EMT provides safe, compassionate basic life support (BLS) transport for patients who need medical monitoring but not emergency response — discharges, dialysis, dialysis, facility-to-facility transfers, and appointments. The EMT works as part of a two-person crew, delivers care within their state scope of practice, and completes accurate documentation that supports medical necessity and billing. Responsibilities Patient care and transport Perform patient assessments, obtain vital signs, and monitor patients throughout transport. Provide BLS care within the EMT scope of practice, including oxygen administration, positioning, and airway support. Safely move patients using stretchers, stair chairs, wheelchairs, and approved lifting techniques. Transport patients between hospitals, nursing homes, dialysis centers, residences, and outpatient facilities. Recognize a change in patient condition and elevate appropriately, including requesting ALS or 911 response. Treat patients and families with dignity, respect, and attention to comfort and privacy. Documentation and compliance Complete a thorough electronic patient care report (ePCR) for every transport before end of shift. Document the patient's condition clearly enough to support medical necessity for Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers. Obtain required signatures, face sheets, Physician Certification Statements (PCS), and insurance information. Follow HIPAA, infection control, and all company, state, and federal regulations. Vehicle and equipment Complete start-of-shift vehicle and equipment checks and restock supplies. Clean and disinfect the ambulance and equipment after each transport. Drive the ambulance safely and legally, following emergency vehicle operation and company driving policy. Report mechanical problems, equipment failures, and incidents promptly. Professional conduct Communicate professionally with dispatch, facility staff, patients, and crew partners. Arrive on time, in uniform, and ready for duty. Complete required continuing education and company training. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical requirements and working conditions Lift and carry at least 125 lbs with a partner (250+ lbs combined), and move patients up and down stairs. Push, pull, bend, kneel, and stand for long periods. Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to assess patients and operate equipment. Work in all weather conditions and in a moving vehicle. Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious disease, and body fluids; PPE is provided and required. Work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as scheduled; mandatory holdover may occur when transports run long. Preferred qualifications 1+ year of EMS, interfacility, or healthcare transport experience. EVOC or CEVO driver training. Familiarity with ePCR systems and medical necessity documentation. Knowledge of the local road network and area facilities.
