OVERVIEW

RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct complex, confidential, and sensitive criminal and administrative investigations by researching alleged misconduct and/or violations of the law. Prepare affidavits, obtain arrest/search warrants that withstand judicial review, and work with County Counsel or prosecuting attorneys on criminal or administrative subpoenas. Coordinate tactical operations and prepare operational plans to gather facts, evidence, and information supporting investigations. Serve as a liaison with Courts, state, federal, and local law enforcement agencies to support ongoing investigations. Interview witnesses and interrogate suspects using industry‑standard investigative techniques. Analyze written, visual, and audio evidence to investigate allegations of misconduct and violations of the law. Develop, document, and utilize informants in compliance with departmental policy and the law. Make arrests for violations of the law to ensure institutional and public safety using established law‑enforcement techniques. Conduct searches of persons or property to collect evidence and ensure officer safety, utilizing established law‑enforcement techniques and equipment. Conduct covert, physical, mobile, and/or electronic surveillance of suspects in compliance with the law and department policy. Respond at various hours to conduct investigations within the jurisdiction of the Probation Department. Prepare criminal cases for referral to the District Attorney for prosecution. Prepare cases for the department for administrative personnel actions. Testify in administrative hearings, civil litigations, and criminal proceedings as a witness regarding investigative findings and conclusions. Prepare detailed investigative reports documenting findings, conclusions, and recommendations for disciplinary action or criminal prosecution. Perform related duties as assigned or as necessitated by emergencies and/or other critical operational needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Option I: Four (4) years of experience conducting criminal or administrative investigations as a peace officer. Three (3) of those years must be at the level of Assistant Probation Director or as an Investigator, Detective, or Agent with a state, county, or local law‑enforcement, corrections, or community corrections agency. Option II: Four (4) years of experience as a peace officer conducting criminal or administrative investigations as a Supervising Deputy Probation Officer within Los Angeles County.

ASSESSMENT PROCESS

This examination will consist of a Structured Interview weighted 100% assessing: Knowledge of Criminal and Administrative Investigations Knowledge of Laws, Regulations, and Ethical Standards Critical Thinking and Decision Making Fact Finding and Information Analysis Adaptability Conscientiousness Integrity & Ethics Planning and Organizational Skills Oral Communication Applicants must meet the Requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the Structured Interview to be placed on the eligible list.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must meet the qualifications for designation as a peace officer as set forth in the California Government Code. Appointees will be required to meet State‑mandated CORE training requirements as defined by the Standards for Training in Corrections. Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of this classification, with or without reasonable accommodation. Peace Officers must be legally authorized to work under federal law.

PHYSICAL CLASS

Class IV – Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

LICENSE

A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform essential job functions.
