Position Overview

The Accommodations Counselor provides case management and support services for students with disabilities by evaluating documentation, conducting intake interviews, coordinating accommodations, and maintaining accurate records. The counselor advocates for students, facilitates referrals, and collaborates with faculty and staff to promote student success. The position requires knowledge of disability laws and best practices, strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Accommodation Coordination and Support

  • Evaluate and interpret disability documentation submitted by students.

  • Conduct intake interviews with students seeking accommodations.

  • Coordinate accommodation services and academic adjustments.

  • Maintain student records and case management files

  • Document student interactions, accommodation plans, and progress.

  • Manage student outreach activities and events.

  • Utilize word processing and spreadsheet applications to maintain records and track services.

  • Makes recommendations for process improvements or administrative changes

  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates the work of others

  • Determining and implementing reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities

Accessibility, Compliance and Accommodation Administration

  • Ensure accommodations comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504, and applicable federal and state regulations.

  • Determine reasonable accommodations and academic adjustments based on documentation and institutional policies.

  • Address confidentiality concerns related to disability information.

  • Consult with faculty and staff regarding disability laws, regulations, and institutional procedures.

  • Assist in resolving disability-related concerns in accordance with university policies.

Program Development and Assessment

  • Create, develop, and implement student outreach programs and events.

  • Develop training materials and educational resources for faculty, staff, and students.

  • Support departmental initiatives designed to improve accessibility and inclusion.

  • Participate in special projects that enhance disability services and student success efforts

  • Monitor and track student progress and accommodation effectiveness.

  • Compile, prepare, and submit semester program reports.

  • Collect and analyze service utilization data.

  • Document outcomes and maintain records for compliance and assessment purposes.

Consultation, Collaboration, and Advocacy

  • Meet with students to discuss accommodation needs and service options.

  • Communicate with faculty regarding approved accommodations and implementation procedures.

  • Provide direct assistance and individual advocacy for students with disabilities.

  • Deliver presentations, consultations, and training sessions.

  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication in correspondence, documentation, and reporting.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Serve as a liaison between students, faculty, staff, and campus departments.

  • Facilitate referrals to campus services and community resources.

  • Collaborate with campus partners to ensure students have access to appropriate support services.

  • Conduct consultations and training for campus and community stakeholders.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on disability access, accommodations, and student support.

  • Foster relationships with faculty and campus departments to promote inclusive practices and student success

  • Manages correspondence and communications for the office.

  • Experience developing and implementing student outreach, retention, and engagement initiatives.

  • Experience conducting presentations, workshops, and training sessions for faculty, staff, students, and community stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Education – Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Social Work, Education, Counseling, and Psychology.

  • Experience – One years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Student Affairs, Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.

  • Experience working in a college or university disability services office.

  • Experience reviewing and interpreting medical, psychological, educational, or disability-related documentation.

  • Demonstrated experience providing case management, advocacy, and support services to diverse student populations.

  • Proficiency with disability services management software, such as AIM, or similar systems.

  • Experience resolving complex student concerns and facilitating collaborative problem-solving among multiple stakeholders.

  • Certification or specialized training related to disability services, accessibility, rehabilitation counseling, case management, conflict resolution, or student affairs.

  • Bilingual communication skills, particularly in English and Spanish.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA), and current disability-related best practices in higher education.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing

  • Ability to positively and professionally interact with student clients and staff

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and prepare reports to assess program effectiveness and student outcomes

  • Knowledge of assistive technologies and accessible educational materials, including screen readers, speech-to-text software, and alternative format accommodations.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others and independently on job task.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data tracking, reporting, and analysis.

  • Strong proficiency in Excel.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and applicable Federal and State laws.

Other Requirements

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift light objects.

  • Ability to move light, medium or heavy objects with assistance.

  • Some lifting/carrying of outreach /presentation materials up to 20lbs.

  • Ability to lift, carry, load or unload up to 20lbs of items for events.

  • Ability to travel independently to attend conferences/ trainings for professional development by driving and/or flying on commercial airlines

Additional Information

A federal proclamation issued on September 19, 2025, imposes a $100,000 fee on new H-1B petitions filed after September 21, 2025. Texas A&M University-Kingsville will not pay this fee. If immigration sponsorship may be required for employment, consult with private immigration counsel, at the individual’s expense, is recommended to determine whether the individual’s current immigration status would make a potential offer of employment from Texas A&M University-Kingsville subject to this fee.

In addition, on January 27, 2026, Texas Governor Abbott issued a moratorium on the filing of any new H-1B petitions unless approved by the Texas Workforce Commission. Accordingly, if sponsorship for employment visa status is required now or in the future, this moratorium may affect the university’s ability to employ the selected final candidate. TAMUK will adhere to applicable regulations regarding visa opportunities.
