About the Position

Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Emergency Duration: 26 weeks Shift: Day/Night Variable Hours per Shift: 3x12 + 2 On Call shifts per 4 weeks Experience: Two years of acute hospital experience as an RN, one year of Emergency Department experience as an RN License: Current RN Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (Must be AHA or RQI) Must-Have: Two years of experience serving as a Registered Nurse, at least one year in an Emergency Department environment Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies the urgent or emergent care priority, and collaboratively provides direct care while applying appropriate interventions. The ED RN evaluates patient progress and evidences skill in using various invasive and non-invasive procedures and treatments for life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes the principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety concerns. He/She assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups and their families as appropriate. The ED RN connects with patients and families during triage. He/She identifies the initial management of patients and assigns priority of care following Triage Standards. The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. He/She conveys and gathers information concisely and accurately. The ED RN conducts a primary assessment of critical needs, detects and documents any major deviations from the norm, and correctly identifies necessary steps and interventions. He/She uses direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data to conduct secondary assessments. The ED RN identifies contributing factors, health history, and activities preceding the emergent health event. He/She assesses psychosocial needs, documents and reports any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse, and reassesses the patient to identify responses to treatment or changes in condition. The ED RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The ED RN understands the importance of safeguarding public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. He/She prepares patients, parents, or families for diagnostic procedures and treatments and makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. The ED RN teaches patients what is needed to continue care and healing at home. He/She assesses patient/family learning styles and structures sessions to maximize understanding. The ED RN asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. He/She seeks to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging their central role in all care and services. The ED RN embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. He/She keeps patients and significant others informed of the care process, anticipates needs, and maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the emergency department visit. The ED RN updates patient communication boards throughout the stay.
