Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university Valid Texas teaching certificate for music and level assigned ESL Certification preferred or required within two (2) years of employment beginning with teachers hired in 2010-11 school year Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong musical ability, knowledge of music theory and piano technique Fluent sight‑reading Ability to explain various piano techniques and musical fundamentals Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior Patience and excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to identify strengths and weaknesses Experience Student teaching or approved internship Previous experience as a piano teacher preferred Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Strategies Teach music theory and help students sharpen sight‑reading, memorization, and improvisation techniques. Provide high‑quality piano instruction to students of all levels. Prepare students for exams, recitals, concerts, and other events. Motivate students, especially when struggling and progress is slow. Provide constructive feedback and guidance to improve technique and musicality. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill district curriculum requirements. Prepare lessons reflecting accommodations for differing learning styles. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations. Plan and use instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment reflecting individual student needs. Conduct assessments of student learning styles and use results to plan instruction. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula according to Individual Education Plans (IEP). Cooperate with staff to plan and implement instructional goals, objectives, and methods per district requirements. Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aides and volunteers. Use technology to strengthen teaching/learning. Assist students in analyzing and improving study methods and habits. Consistently assess student achievement and plan instruction based on assessment results. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned; sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal. Demonstrate proficient piano skills in classroom settings. Assist in selecting books, equipment, and instructional materials. Participate in district‑defined music activities and exhibitions. Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior. Classroom Management and Organization Create a learning environment conducive to physical, social, and emotional development. Foster a positive, encouraging environment building confidence and musical appreciation. Manage student behavior and administer discipline per board policies, regulations, and IEPs. Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Adhere to safety precautions for piano and music supplies. Communication Present a positive role model and support the school district’s mission. Maintain open communication through conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers. Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members. Use clear communication skills to present information accurately. Articulate district mission and goals to the community and seek support. Demonstrate awareness of district/community needs and initiate appropriate activities. Use effective techniques for community and parent involvement. Professional Growth and Development Participate in staff development to improve job‑related skills. Attend and serve on staff committees as required. Comply with federal and state laws, state board regulations, UIL rules, and district policy in music. Policy, Reports, and Law Stay informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies. Stay informed of and comply with district piano and music guidelines. Attend meetings to review, create, and revise curriculum, policies, procedures, and activities. Compile, maintain, and file required reports, records, and documents. Adhere to district handbooks, board policies, AISD procedures, district Code of Conduct, Texas Educator’s Code of Ethics, and applicable laws. Other Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Maintain technology competence for current and future district needs. Implement alternative instruction methods as needed. Conduct afterschool rehearsals with piano club to enhance student skill. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities Assigned teacher aide(s) and student teacher(s). Evaluation Performance will be evaluated per Board policy and the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T‑TESS). Mental, Physical, and Environmental Demands Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals. Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and twisting. Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching overhead.
