The Preuss School, located on the East Campus - east of Interstate 5 of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in La Jolla, California, is a charter middle and high school dedicated to providing a rigorous college prep education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. As part of UCSD, a major research institution, The Preuss School also serves as a model school to study and develop best practices in the preparation of low-income, urban students for college admission to be disseminated to improve public education.

Applies professional knowledge to a narrow range of student disability issues, such as access, proctoring, or note-taking. Performs independently within this narrow range. Receives guidance from disability services manager on more complex issues. Under general supervision, the Learning Specialist Aide prepares, monitors, and delivers curriculum to individuals and groups of students with learning differences, and related work as assigned.

It is essential that individuals who occupy this position be able to adapt to the particular educational needs of the student(s). The Learning Specialist Aide works directly with students according to a highly structured plan. The behavioral and instructional components of the program are often individualized and require precise adherence. The Learning Specialist Aide develops new material and programs and has responsibility for aiding students in the development and maintenance of such varied learning skills as reading, writing, study, and test-taking techniques. Incumbents in these positions should possess a broad knowledge of what constitutes competent and creative skill usage at various academic levels and must be proficient at guiding students of diverse educational backgrounds to levels of skill development consistent with standards of satisfactory performance.

• Work Location: The Preuss School UCSD.

• Demonstrated experience creating successful partnerships with parents, children, teachers and community representatives in providing a quality development and education program.

• Experience providing academic support to students at the secondary level (grades 6-12) in a college preparatory program.

• Experience working with students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

• Graduation from college; paid or volunteer experience working with children in an educational or child care setting, or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.

• Knowledge of the legal framework involving accommodations for disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations in relation to the narrow focus of specialization.

• Knowledge of Special Education instructional/tutorial procedures and practices.

• Thorough understanding of child development, including philosophy, methodology and changes occurring in the field.

• Skill in communicating with students, faculty, staff, and vendors concerning access accommodations.

• Ability to work with and be sensitive to a culturally diverse community.

• Ability to assume responsibility for supervising students.

• Ability to relate to children as individuals and in small and large groups.

• Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure, both orally and in writing.

• Ability to accept training and guidance provided by the Learning Specialist and modify performance accordingly.

• Ability to remain focused, organized, and self-paced.

• Ability to work in a team environment.

PREFERRED:

• Ability to speak, read, and write fluent Spanish.

• Ability to communicate with Spanish-speaking parents fluently to implement special education.

• FBI/DOJ Live Scan background check required.

• Tuberculosis (TB) screening required.

• Duties will require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form is required.
