Summary of Responsibilities : The head coach provides overall direction of the program which competes in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) and NCAA Division III. The primary responsibility for the head coach is to develop a consistently competitive program through the instruction of student-athletes during practice sessions, pre-game preparation, and athletic contests. In addition to instructing student-athletes on how to perform their sport, they will also provide instruction on physical health, team concepts and safety. A secondary responsibility for the head coach is the recruitment and retention of a full roster of players set at an appropriate number as determined by the head coach and the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics, as well as assisting admissions in recruiting prospective students who express interest in participating in the program.
Essential Responsibilities : (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.)
The essential responsibility of the head coach is to coach (teach) student athletes in their sport. They are charged with helping each individual student-athlete reach their full potential in the athletic arena through instruction of physical health, team concepts, and safety.
- Coaches all aspects of the assigned sport to include but not limited to:
- Maintains up-do-date knowledge of, and compliance with, Geneva College, NCAA Division III and the Presidents’ Athletic Conference rules and regulations.
- Acts as chief spokesperson for assigned sport.
- Schedules pre-season and in-season contests in consultation with the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics.
- Organizes and conducts practices and conditioning sessions for all varsity programs and student-athletes.
- Model Christian attitudes and behaviors for student-athletes, students, staff, and fans.
- Coordinates the distribution, collection, and storage of athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies (during the season and at its conclusion) and the collection of fees for lost equipment and uniforms by student-athletes. Works with the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics and facilities staff to oversee the maintenance of practice and game venues.
- Fields competitive teams when playing other Division III colleges and universities. This is to be assessed over a three to four-year time span.
- Hire and supervises part time staff according to established Geneva College and Athletic Department procedures.
- Supports Head Track and Field Coach as the Associate Head Coach in all aspects of the program.
- Demonstrates concern for the spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional well-being of each team member:
- Actively encourages and supports the Christian faith of team members, which includes encouraging and instructing them in spiritual disciplines such as church attendance, prayer, and Bible study. In the case of non-Christian team members, actively encourages them to consider the claims of Christ on their lives.
- Actively encourage, support, and educate team members on the importance of academic success by encouraging or ensuring regular class attendance, monitoring grades, and working to minimize conflicts between athletic and academic responsibilities.
- Actively encourage, support, and educate team members on the importance of their physical well-being by working with the training staff and other appropriate medical personnel to ensure that the student-athletes are physically ready to participate, which includes looking for signs of eating disorders or the use of illegal and/or unhealthful drugs and supplements and taking appropriate preventive measures and establishing healthy workout and practice schedules.
- Actively encourages and supports the psychological and emotional well-being of team members, provides appropriate mentoring and life guidance, and seeks professional assistance when circumstances warrant.
- Recruitment:
- Recruit student-athletes in line with college policy, NCAA Division III, and PAC regulations. Works closely with the admissions department to this end. The head coach has a specific recruiting target for new freshmen as well as a target roster size.
- In consultation with the faculty athletic representative, Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics, and the Registrar’s Office, assures that student-athletes are eligible to participate in athletics according to College policy and NCAA regulations.
- Demonstrates knowledge of Slate recruiting software and works directly with admissions counselors on communications to prospective student-athletes.
- Financial Management:
- Adheres to budget guidelines and keeps records and writes reports.
- Works with the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics, the College’s business office, facilities, and other offices as appropriate to purchase necessary sport-specific athletic equipment and supplies.
- Ensures safe and cost-effective travel to and from contests.
- Directs the process of raising additional funds for assigned sport with approval of the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics.
- Supervision:
- Supervise regular and student employees to include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning/directing work, coaching, evaluating performance, affirming, disciplining, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
- Must have a mindset of mentoring employees under supervision. Should be able to lead in a way that sets a good example, promotes teamwork, and encourages a positive, efficient work environment.
- Supervises a full-time assistant track and field and cross country coach.
- Other:
- Actively participates in athletic department functions and meetings, and in college committees as assigned.
- Maintains effective working relationships with administrative staff, coaches, student-athletes, and other staff.
- Teaches physical education courses as assigned.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Basic Coaching Performance Criteria:
- DIII Recruiting . Geneva programs recruit strong mission fits and good mission prospects. We set annual team targets for new students (freshmen and transfers) with squad size, athletic program, and institutional admissions goals in mind. We purpose to recruit high-performance Christian students to lead our team cultures (strong mission fits) and welcome teammates who want to be at Geneva but may not know the Lord Jesus Christ well or may not yet believe (good mission prospects).
- DIII Retention. Geneva programs recruit graduates, not freshmen. We recruit Geneva student athletes to participate fully in the ministry of education. Athletic recruiting aims to reflect and contribute to the quality of the spectrum of the Geneva College student body.
- DIII Conference Leadership. Geneva programs are perennial winners in character and competition. We expect our teams to be playing in meaningful games throughout the conference season and to finish in the top half of the “conference standings” with winning conference records. (Non-conference games/competitions contribute to program development, power rankings, and conference/playoff preparation.)

Qualifications:
- Minimum:
- Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or related field.
- Experience: Two years coaching at high school (head coach) and/or two years coaching at collegiate level.
- Skill/Abilities: Valid Driver’s license. Willingness to travel, including overnight and weekends. Ability to work evenings and weekends. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Operate a PC and related software.
- Christian Commitment: An eligible candidate must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to the candidate who supports and has an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. An eligible candidate must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
