JOB SUMMARY
Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled labor-oriented functions in one of three areas, cemetery, building maintenance or airport. Assist in major maintenance projects as required.
Employees assigned to the building maintenance perform routine maintenance, performs skilled work in construction, repair and alteration of building structures and fixtures, and provide janitorial servicing. Duties may include: making routine plumbing repairs; replacing light bulbs and fluorescent lights and making electrical related repairs; performing routine carpentry work; performing preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems; making roof repairs; installing glass, screens, refrigerators, and ranges; making minor grounds and landscape irrigation repairs. Janitorial duties will be performed as they relate to the neatness and maintenance of buildings.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Relays maintenance-related information.
- Completes safety inspection forms and reports.
- Documents completed work on work orders.
- Responds to requests and inquiries from the general public.
- Operates a pickup truck, requiring a standard Arizona Driver’s License
- Operates power-driven machinery such as a jackhammer and concrete saw, etc., to complete a wide range of maintenance duties.
- Cleans, vacuums, removes trash and recycling from buildings.
- Cleaning of restrooms, sweeping mopping and resupplying toiletries.
- Uses common hand tools associated with repair and maintenance duties.
- Performs preventive maintenance and cleaning tasks on equipment used to maintain proper working order.
- Paints equipment, restrooms, ramadas, bleachers, and fences.
- Installs electrical conduit and fixtures.
- Works in a variety of weather conditions while performing duties.
- Measures distances to set up special events or block off areas for use. Sets up or removes folding tables, chairs, barricades, traffic cones, or similar objects to set up for special events.
- Works in small, cramped areas to assist with plumbing and other maintenance repairs.
- Conducts safety inspections on equipment and/or amenities. Repairs equipment and facilities (sometimes at heights greater than 10 feet).
- Monitors conditions of grounds, structures, and building facilities to maintain safety standards.
- Detects hazardous situations at work such as traffic sounds when working near moving traffic, and audible backup warning devices when working around moving equipment.
- Detects hazardous gases, smoke, or fumes while working in order to maintain a safe working environment.
- Will use and work with cleaning fluids, detergents, acids, bases, and paints to complete maintenance duties.
- Meets scheduling and attendance requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED; and
- Three (3) years of experience in public works type maintenance field desired;
- or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid State driver’s license upon employment
Special Requirements:
- Must maintain a residence telephone for employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehends and makes inferences from written work orders to complete job duties. Learns job-related material and safety regulations through on-the-job training, and practices safety precaution
- Knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance.
- Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Skill in basic educational competency reading, verbal communication and writing in English with ability to perform basic math operations.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule;
- Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions;
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing;
- Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely;
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions;
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to interact positively with public during occasional contract for purposes of directions or safety concerns.
- Ability to learn and perform assigned tasks quickly and correctly.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and simple diagrams.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers and fellow employees;.
- Ability to respond appropriately to members of the public who are grieving and upset about the maintenance and appearance of grave sites and related issues (cemetery maintenance assignment); and may be required to assist with disinterment (cemetery maintenance assignment).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The following physical abilities are required: crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, reaching, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

The work requires decision making that could lead to major community or organizational consequences if this position fails to make the appropriate decision at the time.
