Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position:

Under direction, performs Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures and operates MRI equipment to capture and produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes. Follows established radiology protocols and standards to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, maximize diagnostic quality and to deliver efficient and effective radiology services. Complies with all other applicable NYC Health + Hospitals, health care setting, and state regulations.


Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. Interviews patient prior to MRI procedure for MRI safety prior to performance of the procedure.
2. Ensures patient safety, including correctly identifying every patient using approved two (2) patient identifiers at every point of contact in the MRI suite.
3. Explains the MRI process and instructs patient on the procedure to obtain optimal imaging diagnostic results; answers all related questions and responds to patient's needs or concerns, as required.
4. Safely sets-up, operates, and adjusts, MRI equipment, selecting proper technical factors to obtain accurate MRI studies; selects software options and imaging parameters, when adjusting an MRI machine; returns equipment to its original location after each scan.
5. Ensures safety for patients, operator and visitors within magnetic field zone four (4).
6. Prepares patient for radiological procedure by safely positioning patient for MRI scans, adjusting immobilization devices, moving equipment into specified position and adjusting equipment controls to set exposure factors; monitors patient during scanning.
7. Observes patient during procedure. Reports unusual occurrences and patient's condition to appropriate personnel.
8. Ensures that MRI rooms are clean, organized, and safe for MRI examinations; cleans MRI scanners after each patient use.
9. Maintains proper-functioning imaging equipment and performs image quality and calibration tests on equipment, as necessary; reports any malfunction to appropriate staff.
10. Maintains imaging supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level and anticipating needed supplies.
11. Evaluates images for technical quality and accuracy, ensuring proper identification of all images is recorded, and presents completed images to Radiologist.
12. Effectively uses electronic medical records to document patient encounters and access pertinent patient data and imaging results; keeps other detailed and accurate patient records and results.
13. Keeps detailed and accurate patient records and results.
14. Performs other MRI-related work, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Current certification and registration in Magnetic Resonance Imaging issued by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT); and
2. Holds or obtains a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) within sixty (60) calendar days of appointment to the title.

Department Preferences

Preferred:

1. Two or more years of experience as a full-time MRI Technologist.
2. A valid license and current registration to practice Diagnostic Radiography as a Radiologic Technologist issued by the NYSDOH.
