CNC Machinist
This role focuses on the programming, setup, and operation of CNC and manual machine tools to produce precision gear-related components for heavy industrial applications. You will work with large, specialized machinery to complete parts safely, accurately, and within prescribed time standards, ensuring all work meets stringent quality and dimensional requirements.
Responsibilities
- Program CNC and manual machine tools by entering instructions, including zero and reference points, setting tools, registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches, and verifying programs before production.
- Interpret and follow work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, material specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, surface locations, machining parameters, and geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).
- Calculate machining requirements using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry, and apply a basic understanding of CAM systems to support accurate and efficient machining operations.
- Set up and operate CNC and manual machines, including Schiess and Hankook brands and other large machine tools, to perform drilling, grooving, cutting, turning, facing, knurling, thread chasing, and related operations.
- Maintain required specifications, tolerances, and quality standards by performing precise measurements, monitoring machine performance, interpreting malfunctions, troubleshooting processes, and making necessary adjustments or reprogramming controls.
- Replace worn tools, sharpen tools, and ensure all tooling is suitable for the job, adhering to established quality procedures and company guidelines.
- Perform preventive maintenance on machines by following company and manufacturer instructions, assisting during machine repairs, and reporting any issues or irregularities promptly.
- Confirm machine settings and program accuracy by measuring positions on first-run or sample parts and verifying that all dimensions and tolerances meet established standards.
- Accurately complete production, preventive maintenance, and quality documentation in company systems to ensure traceability and compliance with internal processes.
- Maintain continuity of work across shifts by clearly communicating irregularities, recommendations, and other operational needs through prescribed communication methods.
- Properly care for and maintain machine tools, tooling, fixturing, equipment, and supplies, ensuring the work area remains clean, organized, and safe.
- Follow all safety standards and procedures consistently while working in a large machine shop environment and handling heavy components.
Essential Skills
- Ability to understand and interpret work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, locations of surfaces, machining parameters, and GD&T.
- Proficiency in programming CNC and manual machine tools, including setting zero and reference points, tools, registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches.
- Strong skills in calculating machining requirements using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Hands-on experience with machining operations such as drilling, grooving, cutting, turning, facing, knurling, and thread chasing.
- Ability to maintain tight specifications, tolerances, and quality requirements in a production environment.
- Experience in troubleshooting machining processes, interpreting machine malfunctions, and adjusting or reprogramming controls as needed.
- Capability to perform and support preventive maintenance on machine tools according to company and manufacturer guidelines.
- Competence in measuring and inspecting first-run and sample parts to confirm machine settings and adherence to standards.
- Strong working knowledge of machining and machine setup, including lathes, milling machines, gear cutting machines, and gear grinding machines.
- College-level certificate in CNC machining and prior related CNC machine work experience, or a significant amount of directly related CNC machine work experience.
- Physical ability to walk and stand for an entire shift, remain stationary for extended periods, frequently use arms, hands, fingers, legs, and feet, and lift, push, and pull objects of 50 pounds or more.
- Visual acuity suitable for close work, color differentiation, peripheral vision, and depth perception required in precision machining.
- Willingness to learn and train over an extended period, including up to two years to master niche machining processes and specialized equipment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Horizontal or vertical boring mill experience.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in CNC or Precision Machining.
- Basic understanding of CAM systems to support programming and machining operations.
- Experience working with large or specialized machine tools, including German brands such as Schiess and Hankook.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.
- Effective communication skills to document work, report issues, and maintain continuity between shifts.
- Demonstrated ability to care for and maintain tooling, fixturing, equipment, and supplies in a production environment.
- Openness to continuous learning, listening, and training in a niche machining environment.
Why Work Here?
You join a highly specialized manufacturing environment where craftsmanship and precision are valued, and where you can deepen your expertise in complex, large-scale machining.
