Medical Lab Scientist

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision performs laboratory work in the areas of phlebotomy, hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and immunology.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Phlebotomy: Competent venipuncture procedures including patient preparation, specimen collection, and processing procedures.
• Laboratory Analysis: Accurate specimen testing, evaluation of results, documentation of results, quality assurance measures and management of critical values. Evaluation and interpretation of laboratory results using critical thinking to ensure that quality results are reported.
• Quality Assurance Analysis: Assists lab management in assessing quality control, instrument maintenance, linearity studies and other quality assurance measures as needed.
• Training and Competency Assessment: Provides new employee training and ongoing training assessment of laboratory skills under the direction of lab management.
• Procedures: Develops and evaluates processes, writing and updating procedures and forms as necessary.
• Instrument Maintenance: Performs and documents quality control, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting problems as necessary.
• Record Maintenance: Reception of a patient or specimen prompts test requisition, processing, billing, quality assurance, testing, reporting, and documentation of problem solving with corrective action. All documentation should be neat, printed, and legible or in electronic format.
• Billing: Reception of a patient or specimen prompts accurate billing procedures to include correctly identifying test and patient diagnosis and understanding the various types of payor sources and how to correctly process charges.
• Computer/Phones/FAX/Copier/Printer : Able to access patient information; use phones, intercom, transfer, hold; fax and copier/printer competency to include long distance faxing, paper and cartridge refill, paper alignment.
• Supply Inventory : Identifies supplies in short supply before supplies run out and orders supplies as necessary using recommended ordering procedures. Dates and labels supplies as they are received. Ensures expired supplies are disposed of and not used after expiration date.
• Information Technology : Competently uses the patient electronic record, lab information system, Google, and other computer technologies for daily tasks.

SUPPORTING DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ensures lab and phlebotomy areas are free of clutter and sanitized daily.
• Fills in for Patient Services Representative when on leave.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, bend at the waist, and walk; use hands and fingers to handle and feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

Work is performed in a healthcare clinic and office setting. ANHC is a tobacco-free campus.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Work Experience: Minimum two years' experience required.

Education, Certification and Licensure: Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science. Must have current National Medical Lab Scientist Certification or obtain certification within three months of hire date.

Additional Skills & Knowledge: Bilingual preferred.
