Position Summary: The Pediatric Orthopedic Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works collaboratively with supervising physicians, fellows/residents, and other APP colleagues to co-manage the pediatric Orthopedic patient according to established practice guidelines and utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards. The APP is responsible for managing patients within the inpatient setting, outpatient clinic visits, consultations, first-assists within surgical cases, and takes possible call on a rotating basis.

Responsibilities:

• APP Inpatient coverage will vary depending on Peds Ortho residents and fellows.
• Inpatient Coverage: In collaboration with the attending and Peds ortho resident/fellow, assist with daily hospital rounds, progress notes, admissions, consult notes and discharge summaries as needed. Pre-admissions for surgery and H&Ps.
• APP will assist with answering nursing questions, floor consults, ER Consults and trauma consults. Communicate plan of care for floor patients to medical service. Assist team with daily charge notes, responsible for patient education for discharge, verify follow up appointments, and write prescriptions for discharged patients.
• Surgical Coverage: The assigned first assist (APP or Fellow) will pre op all surgical patients, set up, and position in OR. Ensure all equipment for OR is ready e.g., surgical implants. First or Second Assist in OR and be proficient at knot tying, multilayer closures, skin closures. Responsible for post op dressings and drains. Write post op admission orders, post op notes and medication reconciliation. Transport patient from OR to PACU or direct admit to ICU. Communicate with medical team regarding post op care. Perform post op exams and review post op diagnostic studies/lab work.
• Outpatient Coverage: Run daily APP Clinic which includes follow ups, new patient appointments, postoperative exams, and in-office procedures (ie casting, suture removal, reductions). Rotates through spina bifida clinic, concussion clinic and any other specialty clinics including satellite clinics. Available for walk-ins or patients requiring same day appointments as needed. Complete Peer to Peer Reviews, Patient Phone Calls, Letters of Medical Necessity, and radiology/lab review. Available to office team to answer questions regarding patient concerns or clinical questions.
• Trauma Call: Primary trauma call coverage provided by Ortho residents and fellows. APP coverage will be required as needed based on staffing deficits and needs of the service. This includes overnight call and weekend coverage. Extra compensation for night and weekend coverage provided in addition to base salary. Call is currently non-restricted, but APP must come in for urgent consults, admissions and OR cases when needed between the hours of 4pm-7am on the weekdays and 7am Friday to 7am Monday on the weekends when covering.
• Quality Improvement, Research and Extracurricular: Each APP should participate in a Quality Improvement Initiative, Research Project, and Educational Project etc. of their choosing with the guidance of supervising physicians or senior APP.
• Holiday Coverage: Primary Holiday Coverage will be provided by the Orthopedic resident/fellow. APP holiday coverage will be requested based on staffing deficits and needs of the service. Holidays are defined as follows per OH policy: 3 minors include Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. Majors include: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New years Day.
• PTO requests: Requests for PTO must be made at least 30 days in advance according to OH policy. However operational needs may require additional notice. PTO requests are a first come first serve basis. Simultaneously PTO requests will not be granted unless approved by the department chief.
• Education: Attends educational opportunities offered for the orthopedic department or OH in person or virtually when able.
• Operations: Attends Orthopedic provider meetings, staff meetings and ortho department meetings. Encouraged to attend surgical department meetings quarterly, Surgical PIPS review and APP council meetings when able. Hours: Monday through Friday, 8AM-4PM. May flex time depending on needs of the team (ie. early arrival for meeting or surgery, or late departure due to meeting or surgery).

Qualifications:

• Education/Training: Graduate of accredited physician assistant program or has obtained an MSN or APRN degree from an accredited nursing school.
• Experience: Two years of pediatric or general surgery experience desired. Surgery, Critical Care, Trauma, or ED Fellowship trained APP desired.
• Licensure/Certification: Current licensure in State of Florida renewed every two years to include prescriptive authority. Maintains NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants). Maintains APRN License and Certification as required by the state of Florida. (Must have Acute Care Certification. Registered Nurse Surgical First Assist not required by a plus) Maintains BLS, ACLS & PALS certification as required by department.
