Assistant Principal

General definition of work performs complex advanced technical work assisting the principal in developing and maintaining an effective educational program consistent with state and federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies and goals of the school board, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the principal. Continuous supervision is exercised over teachers, interventionists, and office staff.

Essential functions assists in providing leadership for the instructional program. Assists in fostering a positive school climate that promotes student learning. Assists in monitoring and assessing student progress; assists in resolving conflicts and managing crises. Assists in ensuring appropriate student conduct consistent with school standards and division policies. Assists in supervising and evaluating staff and providing staff leadership, staff development, and training. Assists in providing effective management of the physical plant, financial accounts, instructional materials, and equipment. Assists in interpreting the school's instructional program to parents and the community; assists in developing positive school-community relations. Assists in developing and implementing an educational operating plan for the school which includes contributions by the staff, parents, students, and community members. Develops and meets personal and professional goals from an established list of possible target areas. Assists in developing and meeting goals based on annual superintendent initiatives. Assists with administrative coverage/supervision during athletic and extracurricular events. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills and abilities thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in administering and supervising programs in a school. Thorough knowledge of prescribed school board policies and procedures. Thorough knowledge in special education programs and their supervision, development and implementation. Thorough knowledge in standardized testing procedures. Skill in oral and written communications. Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students, teachers, support staff and associates.

Education and experience holds a postgraduate professional license in school administration. Bachelor's degree with coursework in education and supervision, or related field and at least 3 years of teaching experience (5 years preferred). Teaching license from the commonwealth of virginia with appropriate endorsement in administration and supervision.

Physical requirements this work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
