Department CC207936 Surgical Assistant Group Job Description Summary Position Responsibilities Assessment Collects patient health data relevant to the operative or invasive procedure throughout the perioperative continuum. Preoperatively performs a focused nursing assessment in reference to planned procedure. Intraoperatively assess patient, wound, and sterile field. Monitors and assesses patient’s postopertive status to determine progress toward expected outcomes or signs and symptoms of postoperative complications. Diagnosis Analyzes the assessment data to determine nursing diagnosis. Formulates and modifies nursing diagnosis based on relevant patient data throughout the perioperative continuunm as applicabele to RNFA interventions. Outcome Identification Identifies and communicates desired patient outcomes throughout the perioperative continuum. Establishes individualized outcomes in collaboration with patient, designated support person or health care providers based on the identified nursing diagnosis as applicable to RNFA interventions (e.g. communicates patient's goals to members of the health care team to provide direction for continuity of care). Analyzes and modifies postoperative outcomes compared to baseline nursing assessment. Planning Develops and manages an individualized plan of care that directs the intervention(s) of the RNFA. Selects, analyzes, and interprets relevant data to develop a plan of care based on the nursing process that mets individual patient needs, is age specific, and reflects professionally recognized standards of care. Plans care to minimize wasted supplies and reduce the lenght of the operative or other invasive procedure. Plans for patient discharge, accessing community resources as necessary. Implementation Implements, manages, and coordinates the perioperative plan of care related to RNFA interventions. Coordinates and manages patient care throughout the perioperative continuum consistent with RNFA practice. Applies nursing knowledge as the basis for effective problem solving and decision making when providing perioperative patient care. Verifies operative procedure, surgical site, and laterality. Participates in positioning the patient in collaboration with the surgeon, anesthesia professional, and other members of the perioperative team. Functions as first assistant to the primary surgeon during operative or other invasive procedures and througout the perioperative continuum in accordance with scope of practice, credentials, privileges, education, and experience. Minimizes the length of the operative or invasive procedure and maximizes surgeon's efficiency of movement within the surgical wound. Implements and maintains sterile technique to prevent patient exposure to microorganisms and other particulates. Protects the patient from thermal, electrical, chemical, or mechanical injury throughout the perioperative continuum. Implement hemostasis techniques. Implements measures to prevent injury related to retained surgical items. Makes postoperative rounds in conjunction with or at the direction of the surgeon as determined by health care organization policy and guidelines of practice. Provides individualized patient, designated support person, or health care provider education regarding identified needs related to RNFA interventions. Facilitate preoperative procedure. Assist with placement of invasive lines as needed. Harvest saphenous veins and radial arteries and assist in the operating room as needed. Prepare harvested saphenous vein/radial artery for coronary artery bypass grafting including making and closing incisions. Assist attending surgeon as either a first or second assistant. Participate in teaching fundamental operating room techniques including aspect technique, trying knots, Hemostasis, tissue handling, wound closure and operating room techniques. Act as a consultant to operating room and house staff personnel concerning cardiac surgery protocols and patient care as designated by the supervising physician. Evaluation Evaluates patient progress towards attaining outcomes. Conducts a systematic and ongoing evaluation measuring the effectiveness of RNFA interventions in relation to achieving identified outcomes. Involves the patient, designated support person, and health care providers in the evaluation process whenever possible. Quality of Practice Systematically evaluates quality of nursing practice. Participates in quality monitoring and performance improvement activities to improve patient outcomes related to RNFA practice. Participates in professional activities directed toward improving patient care. Professional Practice Evaluation Evaluates practice in context with current professional practice standards, rules, and regulations. Practices first assisting in accordance with professional standards, state and federal laws and regualtions, and accreditation standards. Complies with health care organization policies related to RNFA practice and provides care consistentent with facility policies and procedures. Exhibit professional conduct in the provision of patient care. Maintain confidentiality of patient information. Work cooperatively with coworkers, physician and supervisor. Display ability to adjust to variable work schedule and patient volume. accept and implement administrative medical changes and decisions as directed. Accept responsibility for own actions and decisions. Adhere to Mount Sinai Medical Center attendance policy as stated in the Employee Handbook. Obtains 100% mandatory hospital and unit specific inservices annually, prior to evaluation date. Plans, presents, and documents unit inservice as required by level. Documents competency in clinical skills Attends staff meetings as required. annually. Uses established lines of communication for resolution of problems and interpersonal conflict. Collegiality Interacts and contributes to the professional growth of peers, colleagues, and others. Serves as educator, mentor, consultant, and resource to colleagues and other health care professionals in relation to RNFA activities. Collaboration/Consultation Works as a professional colleague with the perioperative team and collaborates with the patient, designated support person, and other health care providers when making decisions to plan care. In collaboration with the patient, the RNFA communicates the individual patient needs to the member of the health care team. Includes the patient and designated support person or care provider in decision making when providing care related to RNFA activities. Influence multidisciplinary relationships by enhancing collaborative processes, "corporate culture", institutional values, and professionalism. Resource Utilization Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, efficiency, the environment, and the cost in planning, delivering, and evaluatiing patient care. Considers health care access, fiscal responsibility, efficacy, and qualilty when providing RNFA related nursing care. Advocates for technical advances in clinical care to increase efficiency and improve outcomes. Leadership Provides leadership in the profession and professional practice setting. Supervises peers, colleagues, allied health personnel, and support team members as assigned. Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities. Advocates for advances in perioperative nursing by participating in professional nursing organizations. Presents a minimum of 2 in-services, 2 patient conferences. Attends 75% staff meetings. Serves as a preceptor/clinical resource. Participates in clinical competency compliance of staff. Advocacy Advocates for individuals and groups related to perioperative health safety. Advocates for a culture of safety for patients and perioperative team members in the workplace. Advocate for patient rights. Qualifications License/Registration/Certification Current CNOR and CRNFA Certification. Current RN Licensure in the state of FL, BLS and Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support required. Education None Experience Min 2 years in area of specialty.
