Endocrinologist (Physician, Joslin Clinic: Adult Diabetes)

Overview The Adult Diabetes Section of the Joslin Diabetes Center is seeking to recruit academic Clinical Endocrinologist(s) to join its large group of providers, participating in clinical care, research, and teaching. The Joslin Diabetes Center, a world-renowned diabetes institution affiliated with Harvard Medical School and member of the Beth Israel Lahey Health network, offers cutting‑edge diabetes care to a diverse population across the Greater Boston area, as well as other national and international visitors. As part of our collegial group of clinicians, you will join 18 MDs and 12 NPs supported by exceptional CDCES, RDs, exercise physiologists, and behavioral health specialists to deliver person‑centered, culturally‑sensitive, comprehensive diabetes care. Among others, programs focused on underserved populations such as the American Asian Diabetes Initiative and the LatinX Initiative are at the core of our mission. Specific interest and expertise in subspecialty diabetes care is particularly welcome, including: Management of persons with diabetes in pregnancy Weight management in type 2 diabetes Care of young adults with type 1 diabetes, with a focus on diabetes technology Care for the underserved and for diverse populations Although primarily in the outpatient setting, the ideal candidate may also contribute to the activities of the inpatient diabetes consult service in coordination with a team of attending physicians, endocrine fellows, and diabetes educators. Other essential responsibilities of the position include active participation to teaching of residents and endocrinology fellows, and interest in quality improvement in diabetes care delivery. Opportunity for academic appointment at Harvard Medical School as Instructor, Assistant or Associate Professor will be commensurate with experience, training and achievements. Suitable candidates will have an MD or an MD‑PhD, and Board Certification in Internal Medicine and BC/BE in Endocrinology. Responsibilities A Joslin Clinic Adult Diabetes Physician treats patients with diabetes of all types with special emphasis on current techniques for management of Type I and Type II diabetes. Also recognizes and treats, or refers for treatment, complications of diabetes. Manages general medical problems that may arise in his/her diabetic patients. Works in a collegial fashion with diabetes educators, including nurses and dietitians. Functions as a member of the medical staff of the hospital(s) where he/she practices. Interacts with the Clinic Administrator in a positive and constructive fashion. Treats patients with diabetes. Evaluates and diagnoses types of diabetes. Chooses appropriate therapy. Actively refers patients for diabetes education, eye, and foot care, etc., per ADA Recommendations. Recognizes complications of diabetes. Chooses treatment to avoid and minimize complications. Provides ongoing management assistance. Treats general medical problems. Evaluates general health status. Diagnoses diseases besides diabetes. Provides general medical therapy. Refers patients when additional expertise is needed. Works in a collegial fashion with other diabetes health professionals. Provides management plan for diabetes treatment. Uses consultative advice as to meal plan. Uses consultative advice from nurse educator. Effects management plan in a cooperative manner and shares responsibility with allied health professionals. Interacts with the medical staff. Fulfills obligations specified by hospital and Center Bylaws. Functions on committees as needed. Attends and participates in conferences. Deals in a collegial fashion with other Center and hospital community physicians. Interacts with the House staff. Satisfies departmental teaching obligations. Participates in conference with House staff. Discusses patients and cases of interest with the House staff. Communicates about inpatient management. Interacts with the Administrative Staff. Deals effectively with the Medical Director. Works constructively with the Center Administrator and other Administrative Personnel. Works with the Affiliated Center Program Managers to insure quality of affiliated operation. Participates in referral development activities. Presents lectures and promotes the program to physicians, hospital staff and potential referral sources. Participates in Joslin community activities (e.g. lectures, health fairs, radio programs). Qualifications M.D. degree from an accredited school Residency in internal medicine Fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism Certification and licensure in Massachusetts Board certified in internal medicine Board certified in endocrinology/metabolism (or eligible for Board certification with certification expected,) or, if hired before board certification subspecialty availability has five years’ experience in the treatment of diabetes and its complications The base pay range reflects what Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (HMFP) reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this role at the time of posting and may be modified from time to time. Actual compensation within this range may be determined based on several factors, including academic appointment, work experience, specialty training, geography of work location, anticipated productivity, FTE basis, and role expectations. In addition to base compensation, this role may be eligible for performance‑based incentives, which may include bonuses for productivity and quality.
