Alpers Engineering Group (AEG) is seeking a Senior Commissioning Engineer based in San Diego to lead K-12 and higher education building commissioning projects throughout Southern California.

This position combines hands on field commissioning with home office flexibility for planning, documentation, and project coordination. You’ll take ownership of your projects, troubleshoot building systems, and work directly with owners, contractors, and designers to verify that systems perform as intended.

Job Responsibilities

Independently lead and manage building commissioning projects from award through closeout and turnover, with an emphasis on field verification, functional testing, controls troubleshooting, and issue resolution.

• Plan, lead, and document functional performance testing of HVAC equipment, building automation systems, lighting controls, and other systems within the commissioning scope.
• Confirm testing readiness by reviewing pre-functional checklists, equipment startup records, testing and balancing reports, and controls documentation.
• Independently use building automation system (BAS) interfaces, graphics, trend logs, alarms, and point data to evaluate equipment operation, verify sequences, and troubleshoot performance issues.
• Conduct construction site visits to assess installation progress, identify discrepancies, and document findings in clear, actionable field reports.
• Develop and maintain commissioning issues logs, coordinate corrective actions with project teams, and verify resolution through backchecks and retesting.
• Lead commissioning meetings and coordinate field activities with owners, contractors, controls technicians, consultants, and AEG team members.
• Prepare commissioning plans, commissioning specifications, project-specific pre-functional checklists, functional performance test procedures, and commissioning reports.
• Perform commissioning-focused reviews of MEP drawings, specifications, controls sequences, equipment submittals, Owner’s Project Requirements, and Basis of Design documents.
• Manage project scopes, schedules, and budgets across multiple assignments, incorporating commissioning activities into construction schedules and identifying potential delays early.
• Serve as a primary commissioning contact for clients and project teams, providing regular updates on progress, outstanding issues, and upcoming activities.
• Mentor commissioning engineers and specialists, providing technical guidance and supporting consistent, high-quality field work and documentation.

Required Qualifications

• Ten or more years of relevant experience in building commissioning, HVAC systems, building automation, or related building systems work, including demonstrated project management and leadership.
• Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA) or equivalent commissioning certification.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field.
• Strong hands on experience with commissioning, building automation and controls, equipment startup, troubleshooting, functional testing, and system operation.
• Experience with digital HVAC and lighting controls, including developing or evaluating sequences of operation and interpreting control diagrams.
• Ability to independently navigate BAS interfaces and use system data to diagnose operational issues and verify performance.
• Ability to read and interpret MEP and architectural drawings, specifications, and equipment documentation.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, lead project meetings, and communicate technical findings clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Familiarity with Bluebeam, BlueRithm, Procore, or comparable document review, commissioning, and project management tools.
• Strong organization, sound technical judgment, and consistent communication when working independently from a home office and at project sites.

Preferred Experience

• Electrical, plumbing, electronic security, A/V, and irrigation control systems commissioning.
• California Title 24 commissioning requirements.
• Energy auditing, energy management system analysis, and building performance evaluation.

Work Location and Travel

This position is based from a home office in the San Diego area and requires regular travel to project sites throughout Southern California, primarily by car.

The balance of home office and field work varies with project needs. Candidates should expect increased site attendance during functional testing, troubleshooting, and other key commissioning activities.
