Athletic Trainer

The George Washington University

I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary: The George Washington University offers a comprehensive, NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 400 student-athletes across 20 varsity sports. A charter member of the storied Atlantic 10 Conference and the league’s only Association of American Universities (AAU) member institution, the GW Revolutionaries lead in the classroom, in competition, and in service to our campus and local communities. GW’s combination of world‑class academics, elite A10 athletics, and location in the heart of the nation’s capital affords our student‑athletes an exceptional platform to achieve their dreams. Reporting to the Assistant Athletics Director, Sports Medicine, the Athletic Trainer is responsible for recognizing, treating, rehabilitating, and providing emergency care and first aid for injuries and illnesses to intercollegiate student‑athletes. This position works with student athletes to provide care, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses both on campus and at game venues. This role provides injury prevention measures such as appliances, braces and devices for control of joint motion and limb protection. This position plans and manages the rehabilitation progress and return‑to‑play planning of injured athletes. Additional duties include providing daily injury reports, reporting status and progress of injured athletes to team physicians and coaches, and maintaining established safety standards. Duties Include: Provides preventive medical care and treatment/rehabilitation for assigned student-athletes and teams. Serve as a liaison between the student-athlete, coach, medical care providers, and team physician(s), among others. Travel with athletic teams to away games as assigned by the supervisor. Properly manage both individual, team, and department medical records/histories regarding the type of injury, treatment and physical examination that the student-athlete receives, rehabilitation processes, and insurance follow-up, as appropriate. Serve as liaison to the Strength and Conditioning department on topics of student-athlete injuries, physical conditioning, weight‑training, and weight/dietary programs of designated student-athletes and teams. Assist in providing mentorship to graduate student certified athletic trainer(s) as assigned. Responsible for ensuring that all University, Department, NCAA and Atlantic 10 (and other affiliated conferences) rules are followed. The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC but will require significant domestic travel for games and events. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. Minimum Qualifications Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Licenses and Certifications Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATABOC). First Aid and CPR certified. Preferred Qualifications Athletic training experience at the collegiate level is preferred. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to establish effective goal-oriented relationships with coaches, staff, student‑athletes, and medical community. Benefits GW offers a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental, vision, life & disability insurance, time off & leave, retirement savings, tuition, well-being and various voluntary benefits.
