Water Systems Technician

What you will do in this role Characteristic duties. Operate, maintain and repair control devices such as pressure regulators; distribution valves; automatic control flume gates and backflow and check valves to assure proper water distribution and system cross connections. Operate, maintain and repair well pumps and machinery. Program, maintain and repair water meters. Calculate and accomplish proper dosage of chlorine for purposes of water sanitation purification and treatment in accordance with state law. Draw and test water samples for regulatory compliance; take samples to outside laboratory as required. Locate underground lines using electronic pipe locator prior to excavation; ensure that distribution valves are not covered or buried after paving or excavation. Flash segments of systems to eliminate deposits or sediment. Isolate and shut down affected portions of system for repairs and in such a manner as to minimize inconvenience to user; notify users of such occurrences. Oversee water system repairs or additions by contractors to assure integrity of the system, measure and map new additions. Patrol and inspect as necessary wells, reservoirs, lakes, pumping stations, lake spill boards and pipelines. Receive and investigate complaints from users. Participate in trainee instruction. Provide on-site guidance for labor crews and plumbers. Respond to emergency calls for water systems at night and on weekends and holidays. Adhere to safety rules. Additional Information Physical Requirements Ability to obtain and maintain a California Noncommercial Class C Drivers License. Must be physically able to move manhole covers, operate valves and access trenches and manholes. Must be able to wear a respirator and pass annual function medical and auditory testing, fitness testing and training. Constantly utilizing light/ fine grasping. Frequently stand/walk, grasp forcefully, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21- 40 pounds. Occasionally perform seated work, kneel/crawl/twist/bend/stoop/ squat/reach work above shoulders. Perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone and sort file paperwork or parts. Rarely climb, lift/carry/pull objects up to 40 pounds. Working Conditions Required to wear appropriate issued uniform. Able to work overtime, evenings, and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Maybe exposed to noise greater than 80db TWA , biohazards, asbestos, and heavy metals. May work in confined spaces or at heights from 4- 10. Feet. Minimum Education and Experience High school or GED equivalent and three years of skilled maintenance work experience, or combination of education and relevant experience some of which includes responsibility for water system operation. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Employees in this classification must have a comprehensive working knowledge of the general principles of water storage, production and distribution. Demonstrated strong communications skills (both verbal and written). Ability to understand and follow job-related instructions given in English, either verbally or in writing. Basic computer skills (e-mail/calendaring). Must be willing/able to wear a respirator and pass annual pulmonary function medical and auditory testing, fitness testing and training. Sufficient experience and the mechanical and plumbing skills and aptitude to work independently and without assistance. Ability to operate or learn to operate, maintain, and repair wells, pumps, water valves, pressure regulators, water meters, flumes and flume gates, chlorinators. Familiarity with state and local regulation governing water disinfection, distribution, and cross connection controls. Certificates and Licenses Required Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license.
