SHORT-TERM/TEMPORARY POOL UP TO 28 HOURS/WEEK

$38.53/HOUR

Under the direction of the assigned administrator, the Bus Driver is a skilled professional responsible for safely and efficiently transporting passengers on predetermined routes and schedules. This role requires a strong commitment to public safety, exceptional driving abilities, and excellent customer service skills.

Key Duties & Responsibilities


The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Essential responsibilities are designated by:


1. Safe Vehicle Operation and Adherence to Regulations:
  • Operate the bus safely in all traffic and weather conditions, strictly adhering to all traffic laws, federal, state, and company regulations.
  • Follow assigned routes and maintain a punctual schedule for picking up and dropping off passengers at designated stops.
  • Use defensive driving techniques to prevent accidents and ensure passenger safety.
  • Manage vehicle maneuvering in tight or busy areas.
2. Vehicle Maintenance and Inspection:
  • Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections (checking tires, brakes, lights, fluid levels, etc.) to ensure the bus is safe and in good working condition.
  • Report any mechanical issues, damage, or defects to maintenance personnel.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the bus interior.
  • Monitor fuel levels and refuel the bus as necessary
3. Passenger Service and Assistance:
  • Greet passengers in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Assist all passengers with boarding and exiting the bus, especially those with disabilities.
  • Keep passengers informed of any significant delays or route changes.
4. Safety and Emergency Management:
  • Ensure passenger safety protocols are followed (e.g., students remaining seated, enforcing safety regulations).
  • Maintain order and discipline on the bus.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies, accidents, or mechanical breakdowns, following established procedures for evacuation and contacting appropriate authorities.
  • Administer basic first aid or CPR if certified and necessary
5. Communication and Record-Keeping:
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, maintenance, and/or other drivers via cell phone to report incidents, delays, or coordinate activities.
  • Complete and maintain accurate daily reports, including passenger counts, mileage logs, fuel consumption, and any incident reports.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL): Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), typically Class A or B, with a Passenger (P) endorsement (and a School Bus (S) endorsement for school drivers).
  • Driving Record: A clean driving record with no major violations or accidents is required.
  • Physical and Medical Standards: Must pass a required medical examination, physical performance test, and federal/state-mandated drug and alcohol screenings. This includes meeting physical, vision (e.g., 20/40), and hearing requirements.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Background Check: Must pass a comprehensive background check
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Expert Driving Skills: Ability to handle a large vehicle in various conditions.
  • Attention to Detail: For vehicle inspections and spotting road hazards.
  • Experience: Previous experience as a commercial or bus driver is preferred.
  • Route Knowledge: Thorough understanding of assigned routes and surrounding areas
  • Time Management/Punctuality: Ability to adhere to strict schedules.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Will be required to perform periodic, mandatory drug testing.
  • Will be required to travel for various off-site events in support of the overall objective of the position.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Physical Demands
Sitting for Long Periods: A significant portion of the workday is spent sitting while driving.
Vision and Hearing Requirements:
  • Vision: Must have strong vision (e.g., at least 20/40 acuity with a 70-degree field of vision) and the ability to distinguish colors for traffic signals.
  • Hearing: Must be able to hear traffic, other vehicles, and a forced whisper at a certain distance.
Physical Strength and Mobility for Operations:
  • Lifting/Pushing/Pulling: May be required to lift, push, or pull objects, often up to 50 pounds, to assist passengers, load/unload baggage (intercity/charter buses), or handle equipment.
  • Steering and Pedals: Must have normal use of arms and legs to control the steering wheel and depress the accelerator and brake pedals with the required force.
  • Stair and Step Use: Climbing multiple steps to enter and exit the bus is frequent.
  • Crouching and Bending: Required for pre-trip/post-trip inspections (e.g., checking under the bus) and securing equipment.
Hand-Eye Coordination: Essential for controlling the bus, navigating traffic, and responding quickly to hazards on the road.

Mental Demands
High Situational Awareness and Vigilance:
  • Drivers must constantly monitor traffic conditions, road changes, passenger behavior, and potential hazards simultaneously.
  • The constant need for selective and alternating attention (switching between multiple tasks like driving, monitoring passengers, and checking mirrors) is demanding.
Quick Decision-Making and Problem-Solving:
  • Required to react quickly to unexpected situations, such as traffic congestion, roadworks, difficult passengers, or emergencies.
Stress Management and Emotional Stability:
  • The job is often described as mentally demanding due to conflicting demands-the need to maintain a tight schedule while also driving safely and providing customer service.
  • Stressors include:
    • Dealing with heavy traffic and adverse weather.
    • Managing difficult or unruly passengers and handling complaints (emotional labor).
    • Pressure to adhere to a schedule. o Irregular or split shift work schedules, which can lead to fatigue and work-family conflict.
Communication and Customer Service Skills:
  • Must be courteous, helpful, and patient when interacting with passengers.
  • Need clear verbal communication to maintain order/discipline and to convey anticipated arrival/departure times.
Integrity and Dependability: Passengers rely on the driver's reliability to transport them safely and on time. Drivers are responsible for the safety of all onboard. Cognitive Requirements: The ability to make sound judgments, adapt to a changing environment, and process multiple streams of information is crucial for safe operation.

Work Environment
The work environment described herein is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this classification. Incumbents in this classification may encounter frequent interruptions by college personnel, students, and the public.


Employees work under typical office conditions with constant interruptions; noise levels may vary depending on activities of the office, division, or department; drives a vehicle to conduct work.

SELECTION PROCESS
After the preliminary screening, selected candidates will be invited to the campus for an initial interview with the Search Committee. Videoconference interviews (in lieu of an in-person initial interview) will be offered. Candidates to be interviewed will be selected from applicants who most closely meet the minimum and desired qualifications. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview. The Search Committee will recommend finalists to the Superintendent/President for a final interview.


The District reserves the right to re-advertise the position or to delay indefinitely filling of the position if it is deemed that applicants for the position do not constitute an adequate applicant pool or if funding is not available.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employees must satisfy all the pre-employment requirements prior to appointment that include, but are not limited to, tuberculosis clearance (EC 87408.6), fingerprint processing, and verification of their legal right to work in the United States. A pre-employment physical examination may be required.
