Registered Nurse (RN) - Emergency Room

Position Description Employment in this classification provides responsible professional nursing care at a unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The nurse is responsible for the care and treatment of patients in accordance with accepted nursing and medical standards. The nurse supervises subordinate clinic personnel and works under correctional clinic conditions, requiring close contact with patients, clinic staff, and outside health professionals. Major/Essential Functions Communicate patient data and document interventions using the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to support decision‑making for patient care. Assist with or perform examinations, assessments, and procedures; operating necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatments, and procedures. Administer or assist with administration and documentation of oral, parenteral, or IV medications, oxygen, and nebulizer treatments. Screen sick‑call requests within 24 hours of receipt and provide nursing sick‑calls to offenders from psychiatric services and the Trusty Camp; perform nursing clinic in the Primary Care Clinic or on the pods. Respond to emergencies, perform advanced technical procedures and skills, and prevent hypothermia, hypovolemia, and environmental exposure. Assist in admissions, discharges, and transfers. Maintain a working knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities. Shift Differential Pay Day Shift Employees earn an extra $4.00 per hour for shifts worked on Saturday and Sunday. Night Shift Employees earn an extra $4.00 per hour for shifts worked Monday through Friday and an extra $8.00 per hour for shifts worked on Saturday and Sunday. Occasional Duties Other duties as assigned by supervisor. Required Qualifications Current RN license in the State of Texas, or ability to transfer license to Texas, or scheduled to complete a program of nursing within 120 days of applying for a position. Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program; new graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX‑RN) on the first attempt.
