Registered Nurse (RN) - Progressive Care Medicine - Rotating

About the Unit Progressive Care Medicine is a 28‑bed telemetry unit with 16 progressive care beds. The unit specializes in caring for patients with complex medical diagnoses, including infectious disease, respiratory disorders, acute renal and liver dysfunction. We work as a dedicated Hospital Medicine Service and provide evidence‑based care with a collaborative and safety‑focused approach. Clinical Nurse I Responsibilities Integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs. Assist the health‑care team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort. Provide direction, education, and begin to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and an integrated multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Qualifications Current RN licensure in Virginia or an eligible compact state. AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent. No prior RN experience required. Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a recognized professional nursing program. Enrollment in an RN to BSN program required for RNs without a bachelor’s; must complete within five years. Clinical Nurse II Responsibilities Demonstrate mastery of clinical skills and apply them to a specific patient population. Assist the health‑care team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort. Recognize changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately. Mobilize resources to meet individualized needs of patients and families. Provide direction, education, and assume leadership responsibilities at the unit level. Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and an integrated multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Qualifications Current RN licensure in Virginia or an eligible compact state. AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent. 12 to 24 months of RN experience. Preferred experience in academic health‑care settings or similar patient populations. Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a recognized professional nursing program. Enrollment in an RN to BSN program required for RNs without a bachelor’s; must complete within five years. Clinical Nurse III Responsibilities Demonstrate clinical knowledge at the unit level and apply it to a specific patient population. Anticipate changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately. Provide direction, education, and serve as a role model in a clinical setting. Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and an integrated multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Qualifications Current RN licensure in Virginia or an eligible compact state. AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent. 3 years of clinical experience. Preferred academic health‑care experience and experience with similar patient populations. Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a recognized professional nursing program. Preferred bachelor’s degree or higher; specialty certification in a clinical area is a plus. Enrollment in an RN to BSN program required for RNs without a bachelor’s; must complete within five years. Independent Actions and Practice Standards Follow documented physician or licensed independent provider orders. Practice within the nursing regulations of Virginia and in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics. Adhere to VCUHS policies, procedures, and established practice standards. Supervisory Responsibilities Organize work and delegate or supervise others (RNs, LPNs, care partners, unit secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments. Shift & Physical Requirements Work all three shifts, including weekends and holidays; shift rotation and schedules determined by the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Physically lift 20–50 lbs.; prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, and reaching overhead or repetitive motions required. Must have strong recall, reasoning, problem‑solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, and logical thinking skills. Ability to handle a fast‑paced environment, steady pace, multiple priorities, and frequent intense customer interactions.
