Erie Taste NY Assistant Market Manager - Grand Island, NY

$23 - $23.5 per hour

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County is hiring a Taste NY Assistant Market Manager for the Grand Island location. The role supports local agricultural products promotion and retail operations under the supervision of the Executive Director and the Taste NY Market Manager. Responsibilities Clerical and administrative support with day‑to‑day planning, coordination, routine management, and guidance to market clerk staff. Straightforward inventory management and purchasing. Operation of the cash register with basic cash controls. Operation and maintenance of inventory and Point of Sale software. Regular staff scheduling. Transportation of inventory from warehouse to store. Customer service and general record keeping. Oversight of temporary program staff and program volunteers. Travel to vendor locations as assigned by Supervisor. Program Delivery – 10% Educate the public on local agricultural products. Educate farmers and vendors in agricultural marketing practices (Retail Ready). Provide experiential learning opportunities to vendors on agri‑marketing topics such as labeling, tracking sales, and use of social media marketing. Engage and interact with customers to educate them on the local food system, NY Agriculture, and related issues. Educate Taste NY Clerks on local and/or regional food and agricultural products. Teach Taste NY Clerks marketing practices and train them in marketing local farms and food products. Serve as a subject‑matter resource for Taste NY products. Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other universities as part of program delivery. Administrative Management – 5% Provide supervision, coaching, and feedback of assigned staff. Assist Market Manager with guidance and oversight of clerk staff and volunteers on facilities maintenance and housekeeping. Guide and oversee completion of clerk staff entries into store logs and equipment journals. Interface with Thruway Authority, DOT, and third‑party contractors according to established procedures. Assist with solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise in the Taste NY Market Program. Supervise direct reports and conduct formal annual performance reviews. Administrative Coordination / Operation – 80% Assist with establishing work schedules and staff scheduling based on marketplace needs. Learn and work with inventory software and POS software. Receive incoming deliveries and input products into the POS system. Support inventory management, monthly shrink records, and physical inventory. Assist with cash errands and off‑site errands. Support timely delivery of inventory invoices and purchase orders for the accounting department. Purchase concession items, consumables, and janitorial goods following procedures. Provide routine clerical and retail market service. Act in the capacity of cashier, stock clerk, or utility clerk when short staffed. Support Market Manager in analyzing electronic problems with POS hardware and software or mechanical issues with refrigeration equipment. Coordinate repairs on programs or machinery with appropriate vendors. Assist with the preparation of progress reports for funders. Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts, and vouchers in a timely manner. Maintain confidentiality of all information and data collected. Provide data to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as requested. Transport self and program materials/resources necessary for performing position responsibilities. Professional Improvement – 5% Jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan with the Supervisor. Participate in all required orientation, training, and in‑service meetings and events. Health and Safety Support the association in maintaining a safe working environment. Familiarize with, and follow, applicable federal, state, local regulations and health and safety policy. Act proactively to prevent accidents and injuries and communicate hazards when identified. Policy and Other Duties as Assigned Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension. Attend staff meetings, report expenses, work with other staff, and engage in general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs. Conduct programming in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Adhere to established Cornell Cooperative Extension Association policies, procedures, processes, and Skills for Success. Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension to the public, community leaders, colleagues, volunteers, members of Cornell University, government officials, and the general public professionally. Perform all duties in a professional, timely, and accurate manner. Maintain regular attendance and punctuality. Required Qualifications Associate’s degree or equivalent education. GED/High School Diploma with one‑year transferable program/functional experience may substitute. Relevant experience for the position. Valid NYS driver’s license; ability to meet travel requirements. Ability to meet acceptable background check standards. Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends. Proficient English communication (spoken, read, and written). Leadership, supervision, and guidance experience. Basic math skills in a fast‑paced environment. Effective verbal, written, and electronic communication skills. Integrity, accuracy, organization, sound professional judgment, and ability to handle confidential information. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines. Detail‑oriented. Proficient with Windows-based software, the internet, and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Drive personal or association vehicle for product pick‑up and delivery; handcart or dolly permitted. Ability to lift 20‑lbs to 50‑lbs regularly with or without accommodation. Ready to work in a retail environment with lifting, moving, and transporting supplies. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with electronic technology (video, audio, computers). Experience in customer service and retail environments. Basic marketing and promotion understanding. Financial accounting and order tracking. Knowledge of basic marketing strategies, advertising, and product distribution. Experience in local food display, merchandising, and sales, and promotion of agri‑tourism. Creative problem‑solving ability. Inventory management, recommendation collection, and recognition of top‑sellers. Independent decision‑making under pressure. Staff management, schedule creation, and procurement of inventory, consumables, and janitorial goods. Position Details Expected Weekly Hours: 40 hours per week (Full‑time). Hourly Wage: $23.00 to $23.50, commensurate with experience. Location: Grand Island, NY. Remote Status: Remote work not available – job is on‑site at the Grand Island Store.
