Senior Maintenance Technician

Overview Under general supervision, oversees and participates in activities related to the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of City facilities, including buildings, facilities, streets, sidewalks, storm drains, landscaping, and park and recreational facilities; inspects facilities and makes recommendations regarding improvements; monitors contractor work and overall performance; performs related duties as assigned. The Position The City is seeking an experienced, hands-on, and service-oriented Senior Maintenance Technician to oversee and participate in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of City facilities, infrastructure, and public spaces. This position serves as a lead worker, providing technical guidance and training to staff while ensuring that City assets are maintained safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a knowledgeable and versatile maintenance professional with experience in public works, facilities maintenance, parks maintenance, or municipal operations. Must possess strong technical skills across multiple trades and be fully comfortable leading projects, coordinating contractors, and training employees. Experience with budget oversight and management is essential, including tracking expenditures, forecasting maintenance costs, managing vendor contracts within approved budgets, and identifying cost-saving opportunities without compromising service quality. This individual is self-motivated, organized, and capable of independently assessing maintenance needs, prioritizing work assignments, and implementing effective solutions. They understand the importance of maintaining public infrastructure and facilities in a safe, attractive, and operational condition. The successful candidate is known for being dependable, resourceful, and customer focused. Typical Qualifications Education and Experience Education: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by specialized training or coursework in construction, landscape management, or the skilled trades. Experience: Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of a variety of municipal infrastructure and facilities, including contract administration experience. Licenses and Certifications Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record, to be maintained throughout employment. Knowledge and Abilities Maintenance principles, practices, tools and materials for construction, maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, streets, sidewalks, storm drains, landscaping, and park and recreational facilities. Principles and practices of contract administration and supervision, including work planning, assignment, review, and the training of staff in work procedures. Principles and practices of leadership. Principles of providing functional direction and training. Basic methods and principles of carpentry, painting, custodial work, and plumbing. Safety equipment and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals. Methods of trouble-shooting maintenance and repair projects. The structure and content of the English language to effectively perform the work. Basic mathematics and shop arithmetic. Traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations. Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations as well as industry standards and best practices pertinent to the assigned area of responsibility. City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols. Techniques for providing a high level of customer service, by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff. Methods of estimating time, labor, and materials necessary to perform assigned work. Record keeping and reporting practices. Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed. Ability Effectively provide staff leadership and work direction. Plan, organize, and coordinate the work of assigned staff. Oversee and participate in construction, modification, maintenance and repair work on buildings, facilities, streets, sidewalks, storm drains, landscaping, and park and recreational facilities. Troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair. Administer public agency contracts. Maintain assigned City facilities in a clean, safe, and operable condition. Use and maintain tools and equipment related to the work. Respond to and resolve questions and complaints from the public. Make accurate arithmetic calculations. Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications. Maintain accurate logs and written records of work performed. Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed. Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, documentation, and other written materials. Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines. Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
