Multi-Task Food Service Worker

Regional School District No. 7 - Winsted, CT
Hours: 4.5 hours/day (22.5 hours/week)
Rate: $19.27- $19.66/hour per Cafeteria Employees Local 1303-327 of Council 4 AFSCME
Start Date: As soon as possible

Position Overview

Regional School District No. 7 is seeking a dependable and energetic Multi-Task Food Service Worker to support daily cafeteria operations in a fast-paced school environment. This position assists with food preparation, meal service, sanitation, inventory, and cashiering while maintaining high standards of safety and customer service, and other duties as needed.


This is a school-year position with one additional day worked at the beginning and end of the year.

Responsibilities

Food Preparation & Service

• Prepare fruits, vegetables, entr es, sides, and snacks according to recipes and USDA guidelines.
• Prepares ingredients by washing, peeling, chopping, slicing, and dicing fruits and vegetables.
• Set up serving lines, salad bars, deli bars, and utensils; restock as needed.
• Ensures food preparation and handling guidelines are observed to prevent foodborne illness.
• Serve appropriate quantities from standardized recipes to students and staff in a friendly manner.

Sanitation & Safety

• Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, workstations, serving lines, and dining areas.
• Operate commercial dishwashers; wash trays, pots, pans, and utensils.
• Follow all HACCP procedures, food safety regulations, and proper stock rotation (FIFO).

Inventory & Stocking

• Provide timely information to the kitchen manager to ensure accurate and appropriate daily/weekly/monthly food and non-food items are ordered.
• Receive and store deliveries in refrigerators, freezers, and storerooms.
• Maintain inventory accuracy and report needs or discrepancies to the kitchen manager.
• Rotate stock to ensure freshness and prevent waste.
• Essential ability to twist, lift, push or pull items up to 50lbs.

Cashiering & POS

• Operate the Point of Sale (POS) system and cash register.
• Process payments, count money, and prepare daily deposits and reports.

Other Essential Duties

• Assist with special events and catering as needed.
• Attend required trainings and meetings.
• Support a positive, cooperative work environment and maintain confidentiality.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Cafeteria Manager or Food Service Director.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, food preparation, nutrition, and quality cooking methods.
• Ability to operate cafeteria equipment and POS systems.
• Strong multitasking skills and ability to work efficiently under pressure.
• Positive interpersonal skills and ability to work well with students, staff, and coworkers.
• Fills in for other kitchen staff roles as needed and assists with special catering for school events.
• Ability to stand for long periods and lift/push/pull up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to tolerate hot and cold temperature environments.
• Fingerprinting and DCF background check required for hire.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Work Environment

This position works in a high-volume school kitchen with exposure to heat, cold, noise, wet floors, sharp tools, and cleaning chemicals. Essential duties require frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling items weighing up to 50 lbs., as well as repetitive motion.
