Patient Care Associate – Job Description As an integral part of the clinical care team, the Patient Care Associate is responsible for patient care and support activities promoting patient‑focused care within the Specialty Service. The Associate supports the registered nurse in patient care activities, including assisting patients with activities of daily living, collecting specimens, performing procedures, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and performing other duties as needed. Responsibilities Demonstrate the ability to perform clinical, technical, and service/administrative tasks. Provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of patients in the assigned area. Perform and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations), document intake and output, and collect other required data. Obtain patients' pain ratings as a fifth vital sign in all areas except Pediatrics. Perform clinical procedures such as specimen collection (blood glucose, venipuncture, EKG), application of compression devices, post‑mortem care, and maintenance of skin integrity. Set up selected procedures and assist registered nurses accordingly. Assist patients with activities of daily living (feeding, bathing, toileting), orientation to the clinical environment, ambulation, and mobilization. Assist with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays, passing menus, assisting menu completion, mixing nutritional supplements, reporting variations, and maintaining accurate systems for dietary orders. Maintain a safe, clean, and functional environment; ensure comfortable patient movement; assist with room maintenance (bed‑stripping, trash removal). Perform on‑to‑one or close observation for safety, elopement risk, or suicide prevention. Maintain isolation status for patients under RN direction and according to procedures. Perform scheduled hourly care checks/rounding, focusing on toileting, comfort, positioning, and pain awareness; notify RN if rounding has not been completed. Use the Vocera system or Mount Sinai phone for sign‑in/sign‑out protocols. Perform other duties as assigned, including generating reports. Promote cultural diversity, respect individual patient needs, and incorporate diversity into care delivery. Greet visitors, answer phones promptly, escort visitors as appropriate, and provide information. Answer the patient call system and refer calls to appropriate staff. Identify and report physical plant and equipment problems to management. Transport patients to stretchers or wheelchairs as required. Deliver and collect trays and bedside items; deliver flowers to patients. Strip units or cubicles and perform emergency clean‑up and transport. Perform discharge bed making and transport specimens. Update communication boards, discharge logs, medical records, and admission/transfer/discharge systems. Maintain supplies and care of equipment. Participate in departmental performance‑improvement activities, maintain confidentiality, and observe compliance policies. Participate in the development of other staff members, meet regulatory and licensure requirements, identify learning strengths and needs, and utilize learning resources. Demonstrate a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in interactions with patients, families, staff, and the extended community. Qualifications High School Diploma (graduate or equivalent). Certificate of completion of a medical assistant / patient care assistant program (or equivalent) with skills in venipuncture and EKG. Interpersonal skills to communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the Specialty Service. Documented Medical Assistant / Patient Care Associate training. Three to nine months of healthcare experience preferred. Ability to set priorities, problem‑solve, use proper judgement in difficult situations, and be flexible. Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English. Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform a variety of tasks in the assigned area. American Heart Association Heartsaver or BLS certification. Compensation Salary range: $27,850.01 – $29,877.20 hourly. Actual salaries depend on factors such as experience, education, and operational need.
