DSHS HCLA Adult Protective Services Investigator

DSHS HCLA – Adult Protective Service Investigators (Social Service Specialist 3) Adult Protective Services (APS) in Tacoma, WA is seeking experienced professionals to serve as Social Service Specialist 3. The role involves independently investigating reports of abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and self‑neglect, gathering evidence, and connecting vulnerable adults with protective services. Responsibilities Conduct face‑to‑face interviews with alleged victims, perpetrators, and collateral contacts. Collect and evaluate information to make decisions related to investigation, services, and outcomes. Document all activity electronically and maintain accurate records. Collaborate with law enforcement, judicial entities, families, facilities, and community agencies on client needs. Identify and refer at‑risk adults to appropriate services. Provide client advocacy, consultation, family support, and crisis intervention. Prepare and present testimony at administrative hearings, court proceedings, and other legal proceedings. Desired Skills & Abilities Ability to assess complex situations and develop practical solutions. Strong time‑management, organizational, and Microsoft Office skills. Proficiency in accurate data entry and documentation practices. Familiarity with Medicaid terminology, regulations, and policies. Flexibility and adaptability to changing policies and priorities. Strong critical‑thinking and focus under pressure. Independent judgment in urgent safety‑related situations. Experience assessing risk and ensuring safety of vulnerable adults or children is highly desirable. Eligibility Requirements One year as Social Service Specialist 2 and completion of the agency’s training program. OR a Master’s degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, criminal law/justice or allied field, plus one year as Social Service Specialist 2 or equivalent experience. OR a Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus two years of paid social service experience equivalent to Social Service Specialist 2. Equivalent combination of education and work experience totaling 6 years substitutes for a degree. Practicum work may substitute for one year of paid experience. Additional Information Positions require travel to meet business needs. Hybrid telework or flexible schedule may be considered after successful completion of the training period. Employees must complete a formal training course sponsored by the division within one year of appointment. Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs.
