Senior Substation Protection and Controls Engineer

Description Senior Substation Protection & Control Engineer – design and implement substation protection and control projects for electric utilities from 12kV up to 500kV. Work within a design team, collaborate with clients, and ensure designs meet quality, safety, and schedule requirements. Hybrid Work Schedule: 4 days a week in the Houston, TX office. Responsibilities Design relay one-line schematics, three-line AC schematics, and DC protection schematics. Create panel layout and wiring designs. Develop bill of materials based on design criteria. Perform quality control checks on wiring designs. Provide complete project lifecycle support from scoping to final design, implementation, and construction support. Apply the minimum requirements of the National Electrical Safety Code and client standards to the design processes. Work with designers/drafters to create required drawings for each project. Stakeholder engagement including interfacing with local and nationwide utility clients. Collaborate across disciplines (substation, telecom, civil structural). Read and analyze one-line drawings, three-line drawings, AC/DC schematic drawings, and wiring designs. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field. Senior‑level: 4+ years of substation protection/control design and/or field testing/commissioning experience. Lead‑level: 8+ years of substation protection/control design and/or field testing/commissioning experience. Experience executing substation protection and control projects. Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with internal teams and clients. Ability to meet deadlines under pressure. Collaboration and leadership skills; can work effectively in a team environment. Self‑starter who works independently with minimal direction. Strong analytical skills and proven problem‑solving ability. High level of computer competency. Willingness to travel to project/client sites. Preferred Qualifications U.S. Citizen and able to pass a DOE background check. Engineer Intern (EI/EIT) certificate. Professional Engineer (PE) license. Experience performing quality control checks on small substation protection and control design projects. Experience working on CAD tools. Master’s degree in a related field. Field testing/commissioning experience. Pay & Benefits Pay Range: $87,100.00 - $157,450.00.
