The role We are looking for a seasoned journalist with a track record of scoops and smart features to join the FT’s San Francisco bureau on one of the newspaper’s most dynamic beats. This person will lead our coverage of Meta at a critical time as Mark Zuckerberg bets the company's future on artificial intelligence. Zuckerberg - who has reinvented himself politically as “Maga Mark” - has hundreds of billions at his disposal, but faces long odds to catch more advanced rivals and establish Meta on the AI frontier. The role will also involve covering other newsworthy tech companies including Elon Musk’s X and the future of ByteDance’s US TikTok business following its deal with Donald Trump. We want a journalist who can get inside these companies to break news and tell colourful stories about their powerful founders during a pivotal moment for Silicon Valley. This person will work closely with our growing team of tech, finance and deals reporters in San Francisco, New York, London and China, as well as the FT’s wider network of 700 reporters in 40 countries. Collaboration, sharing tips and bylines are essential. San Francisco bureau chief Stephen Morris and technology news editor Murad Ahmed are happy to discuss the role. Salary range A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $95,000 to $145,000. To ensure pay fairness, the successful candidate will be offered a salary within the estimated salary range based on a number of considerations including but not limited to: skill set; experience and training; certifications; and other business and organisational needs. This position is open to a broad pool of candidates, both internal and external. Where an external candidate is hired or a successful internal candidate is appointed to the role on terms covered by the collective bargaining agreement, they will be represented by the News Media Guild (NMG). Candidates appointed on other (i.e. foreign) employment terms, including certain internal transfers on assignments from other bureaux, may not be represented by the NMG. The use of AI Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism. Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not by default use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.
