The Behavioral Health, Patient Care Director (PCD) for adult, geriatric, and child Inpatient Detox services will oversee and manage all inpatient detox services in the hospital, including but not limited to outreach, patient safety, quality control, staffing, throughput, and coordinating care on a twenty-four-hour basis. A priority of this position is for the PCD to be the Chief Retention Officer for the area and utilize principles of service excellence to achieve goals on staff development, staff satisfaction and staff retention. Provides patient reviews that are coordinated to provide a seamless, integrated system of care that is high value, cost effective and customer focused. The PCD is committed to creating a work environment that fosters pride, teamwork and continuous learning and associate ability to meet patient needs. The PCD must have knowledge of specialty services and related nursing standards and be aware of the changing health care environment locally and nationwide.

 

Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Leads nursing practice for the promotion of the patient experience.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in all aspects of Purposeful Hourly Rounding and role models expected behaviors.
  • Ensures the integration of rounding into clinical activities to enhance Patient Centered Care validates that team members perform rounds on all patients by direct observation and patient feedback.
  • Assesses team member competency rounding and provides consistent meaningful feedback with more focused feedback as needed.
  • Conducts rounding of patients on a daily basis. Conducts rounding on the team on a weekly basis
  • Communicates quantitative and qualitative information regarding the patient experience and staff engagement to the staff and the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team that leads to the development and implementation of an action plan.
  • Collaborates with the physician and escalates concerns as appropriate.
  • Follows up on all patient concerns in a timely manner and provides service recovery as needed.
  • Demonstrates caring, agility, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening through dialogue, body language, and actions.

 

Quality & Safety

  • Designs, supports, and leads a safe, therapeutic, and efficient patient-centered care environment for professional practice.
  • Identifies and investigates issues or variances in practice/operations by participating in the RCA process and implements corrective action plans.
  • Participates in unit and hospital-based quality, patient safety, and patient experience process improvement initiatives
  • Fosters a fair and open Just Culture that encourages error and near-miss occurrence reporting.
  • Leads interdisciplinary quality improvement teams using the principles of high reliability.
  • Reviews unit progress, changes, and compliance with quality and safety metrics with clinical nurses and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Responds to escalations of potential safety hazards or gaps from best practice by correcting concerns following institutional chain of command protocol.
  • Monitors institutional information technology infrastructure and corrects gaps in clinical nurse documentation.
  • Leads staff participation in quality and safety initiatives and mandated compliance measures.
  • Demonstrates accountability for all unit quality and safety practices and compliance and ensures required evaluation of staff competencies is maintained.

 

Operations & Administration

  • Supports implementation of the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of the department, throughout the clinical service and individual patient care units.
  • Provides administrative and clinical oversight to ensure that all activity (staffing, support services, inter disciplinary collaboration, resources, and financial viability) supports the goals of the organization.
  • Works collaboratively with physician dyads and all members of the healthcare team to promote patient care and regulatory standards.
  • Prioritizes staff engagement and retention strategies in accordance with system and local hospital retention goals.
  • Maintains a nursing unit in compliance with all regulatory agency mandates, including the regulations of NJ DOH and The Joint Commission.
  • Oversees 24-hour patient care delivery, throughput, staffing and processes to ensure efficient and effective operations in all clinical specialties.
  • Implements and monitors unit budgets, including capital equipment allocation, budget variances, management of OT and vacancies according to MSHS financial goals.
  • Monitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies
  • Maintains control of established positions and manages the recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
  • Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
  • Evaluates nursing staff performance and mentors, coaches, counsels, and disciplines staff as needed.
  • Ensure all team members have met their orientation goals/weekly progress reports and annual competency requirements and participates in the Competency Skills Day for unit/service
  • Conducts regular department meetings to ensure communication with staff about progress, changes and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures. Maintains records of minutes for staff team meetings.
  • Encourages, recognizes and rewards team member participation in quality and safety initiatives, compliance, and successes.
  • Facilitates organizational change initiatives by using effective strategies.
  • Leads a shared decision-making model by establishing a structure of shared governance, just culture and staff engagement in practice councils, departmental meetings, and initiatives.
  • Interprets and implements collective bargaining agreements affecting staff.
  • Responds to protest of assignment in a timely manner as detailed in the collective bargaining agreement and discusses the resolution in unit staff meetings.
  • Participates in staffing planning committees to meet all NJ mandatory requirements to insure safe staffing

  • Leads shared decision making through unit/service practice councils, nursing department and hospital committees, and clinical service/unit initiatives.

  • Integrates the values of research and evidence-based practice and its application to nursing practice and the environment of care.
  • Contributes to the profession of nursing through leadership and participation in professional organizations.

 

Experience Requirements

  • 3-5 years of progressive nursing leadership experience demonstrating solid management abilities.
  • Must possess relevant clinical expertise in adult, geriatric, child, and detox.
  • Proven clinical and nursing administrative expertise in the assigned nursing practice area.
  • Critical thinking and organizational skills are essential.

 

 

Licensing and Certification Requirements

  • Licensed as a registered nurse, New Jersey
  • Master’s in Nursing required
  • Child abuse certification is required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), AHA is required
