MAKAH TRIBE POSITION DESCRIPTION

SHIFT: 7 hrs/day 9 mo per year

REPORTS TO: Case Manager (Education)
SUMMARY: The purpose of the position is to preserve the Makah Culture and assist and empower eligible tribal students, by instructing children aged three through twelfth grade in history, customs, arts, & crafts, signing & dancing and Makah Language, and utilize collaborative efforts with the schools and Parent Committee to provide supplementary assistance to meet the specialized and unique academic and cultural needs of tribal students on a daily basis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
Develop, coordinate, maintain, and monitor JOM services by ensuring compliance with federal, state, and tribal policies and regulations. Submits annual reports and related information, grant application, and tracks student progress.
Provides tutoring, mentoring, career counseling, and cultural enrichment activities.
Assists in implementing, planning and designing age-appropriate curriculum to maintain established educational standards.
Arranges for and instructs children aged three through twelfth grade students in Makah History, customs, arts & crafts, signing and dancing, and Qʷi·qʷi·diččaq on a daily basis.
Utilizes teaching tools such as virtual resources, audio-visual techniques, puppets, and flannel board stories.
Researches cultural resources in the Neah Bay community and incorporates those into classroom activities, i.e., storytelling, beading, basket weaving, language, carving, and singing and dancing.
Works closely with school district staff, tribal agencies, and the Parent Advisory Committee to plan and deliver services.
Participates in staff meetings with Head Start, Neah Bay Schools, Makah Cultural Research Center, and E&T.
Teamwork with the E&T, Makah Cultural and Research Center, Makah Head Start and Neah Bay Schools. Work with program partners in presenting lessons on Makah History, Language, and Culture.
Assesses student needs, tracks attendance/academic progress and evaluates program effectiveness.
May be required to attend JOM related conferences, meetings, and training opportunities. Must promote a healthy and positive lifestyle by being drug and alcohol free.
Communicates with parents, school leadership, and tribal organizations regarding JOM activities and student achievement.
Maintain and manages file plan records and provides information for E&T activities. Prepares and submits reports to E&T Case Manager as required.
Coordinates and schedules monthly and/or quarterly meetings with the JOM Parent Committee and serves as ex-officio to the Committee. Establishes agendas for the committee meetings; ensures and performs the development of appropriate, complete, accurate, and timely materials to support deliberating body decisions, and serves as the Recording Secretary for the Committee. Serves as the official liaison to report all official actions and recommendations to the E&T Case Manager.
Participates, plans, and/or organizes family activities and other events related to JOM services. Develops, writes, and implements newsletters to inform parents of updates to student services.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
Experience in human services and educational programs.
Must have minimum of 5 years documented experience with Makah Culture Programs.
Must have a minimum of two years classroom experience.
State of Washington First People, Language, Cultural & Oral Traditions Certificate or obtain during the probationary period.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, employees of organization, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have a valid Washington state Drivers license and insurable. May be required to drive a Tribal GSA vehicle to perform job duties. If so, a driving history/background check will be conducted on the applicant.
This position is classified as a sensitive Tribal position. Therefore, applicant must submit to and clear a pre-employment criminal background check.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the Johnson O’Mally (JOM) Act.
Must have knowledge of Qʷi·qʷi·diččaq, Makah arts & crafts, dances and songs.
Ability to work with children in a pleasant and professional manner. Must have a positive attitude and strong commitment to education and our youth while exhibiting professional behavior.
Ability to instruct children of all ages.
Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
Ability to coordinate extracurricular activities for parents, children, and the community.
Ability to communicate well and establish good working relationships with staff, including Makah Head Start program, Makah Cultural Research Center, Neah Bay Schools and the general public.
Ability to operate a computer and knowledge of the Google platform, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Publisher.
Must have good organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and follow instruction.
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Must submit to and clear a pre-employment alcohol and drug test and random testing, in accordance with the Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Act of 2002.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 5o pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
