Owner (Columbia)

Role Description The Owner role at Whiz Kid Academy is a contract position responsible for overseeing the overall operations, strategic direction, and financial health of the academy. This hybrid role is based in Columbia, MD, with flexibility for some work from home, requiring regular on-site presence for staff oversight, facility management, and direct engagement with families and partners. Day-to-day tasks include setting and monitoring educational and business goals, supervising instructors and support staff, managing budgets and vendor relationships, and ensuring compliance with local regulations and safety standards. The Owner will also develop and refine programs, lead marketing and enrollment efforts, maintain high-quality customer service, and foster a positive, inclusive culture. This position requires hands-on involvement in problem-solving, decision-making, and continuous improvement of academy operations.

Qualifications

• Experience in education management or childcare program administration, with a strong understanding of curriculum, student engagement, and family communication.
• Demonstrated business and financial management skills, including budgeting, planning, and performance tracking.
• Proven leadership and people-management abilities, with experience hiring, training, and mentoring staff in a collaborative environment.
• Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to build relationships with families, staff, and community partners.
• Knowledge of local licensing, safety, and regulatory requirements related to educational or childcare programs (or willingness to learn quickly).
• Comfort with basic digital tools and systems for scheduling, communication, record-keeping, and marketing.
• Previous experience owning or operating a small business, education center, or similar organization is highly beneficial.
• Relevant education such as a degree in Education, Child Development, Business, or a related field is preferred but not strictly required with equivalent experience.
