COMMUNITY INSPECTOR

Job Title

The purpose of this position is to inspect and enforce compliance with all laws, regulations and ordinances governing land use, minimum housing, property maintenance, abandoned and uninhabitable properties, signs, zoning, landscaping and related environmental issues.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Conducts field inspections and investigations which may involve the review of construction sites, vacant land and unsanitary dwellings to determine compliance with applicable state and local laws, codes, ordinances and other regulations.

Travels throughout the City in response to complaints and requests for investigation of code violations.

Investigates citizen complaints of littering, abandoned vehicles, unsafe structures, signs, landscape, sanitation (open septic tanks), non-maintenance at residential property, minimum housing violations, commercial maintenance code, noise and other violations and takes corrective action.

Informs neighborhoods, school groups, individual residents, Home Owner and Civic Associations on services and regulations concerning all aspects of the community environment.

Compiles and distributes comprehensive leaflets, flyers, notices, and other printed material on such codes and regulations in the methods of reporting violations.

Prepares and serves notices to remove or correct existing violations; writes citations and files misdemeanor charges in case of failure to remove or correct a violation.

Compiles and prepares written reports on investigations, maintains all inspection results, prepares correspondence and notices of violations in a computerized case management environment.

Gathers evidence, photographs, information and documentation to support action for gaining compliance.

Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Requires two years of experience working with the public in code enforcement, planning, building inspection, construction or closely related field. Possess and maintain valid State of Florida Driver's License.

Physical Demands: Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

• Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment): Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

• Involves routine and frequent exposure to: bright/dim light; dusts and pollen; extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions; extreme noise levels; animals/wildlife; vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors; traffic.

Special Certifications and Licenses: Possess F.A.C.E. (Florida Association of Code Enforcement) Level 1 Certification or must obtain certification within 12 months from date of appointment.
