Assistant Controller

Location: Houston, TX or Dallas, TX | Hybrid 2 in office Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire (estimated through mid-Q1 2027, with potential for extension) Pay Rate: $60-65/hour W2 Our client, a large, private company seeks an experienced Assistant Controller to bolster their property and development accounting functions. This immediate contract opportunity, driven by a team transition, requires a professional with a strong background in commercial real estate accounting, preferably with multifamily property and/or development accounting experience. The role involves senior-level review and accounting oversight for multiple projects and entities, encompassing monthly reporting, general ledger, treasury, audit support, technical accounting, and payment approvals. While not directly managing staff during the contract, this individual will act as a senior resource, guiding both domestic and offshore accounting teams. Key Responsibilities: Review monthly/quarterly financial reports for assigned properties, projects, and legal entities. Conduct high-level general ledger review and analysis for accuracy. Provide GAAP guidance on complex accounting matters. Approve payments, including check runs and wire transfers. Review bank reconciliations and support treasury activities. Review cash activity, distribution calculations, funding requests, and cash flow projections. Support accounting for multifamily property operations and/or real estate development. Review reserves, write-offs, and other accounting activities per governing agreements. Understand loan agreements, joint venture agreements, property management agreements, and leases. Assist with debt modifications, acquisitions/dispositions, interest capitalization, and complex transactions. Review accounting position memos for new or unusual matters. Support financial statement and internal audit activities, especially during October and November. Review tax projections and preparation workpapers. Maintain and interpret internal controls, policies, and procedures. Provide accounting guidance and oversight to internal and offshore teams. Identify accounting/operational risks and recommend solutions. Assist with process standardization and continuous improvement. Prepare and/or review ad hoc reports for management and stakeholders. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field. CPA preferred not required Minimum 6+ years of progressive professional accounting experience. Strong preference for multifamily, property, and/or real estate development accounting experience. Previous public accounting experience strongly preferred. Prior leadership, review, or oversight experience with accounting personnel. Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting. Experience with general ledger, reconciliations, treasury, audit support, and internal controls. Ability to review complex accounting matters and provide practical guidance. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable managing multiple projects, entities, and stakeholders in a deadline-driven environment.
