Job Description - Nursing Station Clerk/NSC Trainee Neurocritical Care Unit Full-Time Evening Shift (2504748) Position Summary Nursing Station Clerks 1 are assigned to either inpatient or outpatient units where there is daily contact with patients. This team member greets visitors and directs them to appropriate locations; answers telephones; performs data entry activities; maintains daily and clinical logs; prepares, updates, and maintains patient charts and files; fills out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions; mails patient letters; and delivers supplies and records to an assigned unit. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non‑competitive and the official probationary period will begin. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non‑competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, knowledge and understanding of patient care and effectively respond to changing patient needs by making decisions based on ethical principles and adhering to our high standard of excellence. Duties Orient patient and/or family to unit, providing general information regarding the room, unit and hospital and serve as a contact person to patients and families. Give information on patient condition within existing policies, and direct visitors to the appropriate locations. Process physicians' orders by recording written orders in charts, kardex, flag sheets, or directly into a computer file after review by a registered nurse; and by filling out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions. Receive new admissions. Prepare and maintain patient charts, daily log and clinic log. Qualifications Eligible List Appointment: Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for Nursing Station Clerk1. If you are on the Civil Service eligible list for Nursing Station Clerk1 you may receive a canvass letter. You must complete and return it as instructed on the letter. Provisional Appointment: In the absence of an eligible list with three or more candidates willing to accept a position, a temporary provisional appointment may be considered. Provisional candidates must have the following: One year of full‑time clerical (in a health care setting), secretarial (in a health care setting), or patient care experience. Must take the examination for Nursing Station Clerk1 when it is next offered and must be reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment. 55b/c Appointment: This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications and a current 55b/c eligibility letter. Section 70.1 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service in a title approved for transfer to Nursing Station Clerk1. Pre‑Employment Requirements Successful completion of a pre‑employment physical examination and medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services. Completion of an electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references. Successfully completing a 4‑panel drug screen. Meeting regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings. Providing a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s). This range represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience.
