School Nurse

Reports To: Building Principal & School Nurse Supervisor Qualifications:

• Bachelors degree desired but not required.
• Registered professional nurse with current Connecticut licensure.
• Educational requirements as per State of Connecticut statutes 10-212-2.

Duties:

• Implements and upholds the school health policies of the East Haddam School System as set forth by its Board of Education and required by the State of Connecticut.
• Operates the school health office in a professional, competent, and confidential manner; pursuant to State statutes.
• Health Planning for Educational Placement:
• Participates as a member of school-based Child Study and Planning & Placement Teams as appropriate.
• As a member of these interdisciplinary teams, helps to minimize the impact of health impairments on learning by assisting in the identification, assessment, and planning for student care needs.
• Collaborates with staff and parents to facilitate a better understanding of how a child's health needs may impact on their educational plan.
• Helps to foster tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity in the school community.
• Nursing Service Delivery (according to Nursing Practice Standards):
• Assures optimal wellness of individuals by use of the nursing process in all interventions by assessments, planning, and interpretation of data in the educational environment.
• Performs all health screenings as required by State statutes and as necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
• Communicates and collaborates with community providers of services for children.
• Coordinates health care needs of students in the school setting.
• Maintains standards of school nursing practice which includes collection of data, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, triage, and delegation.
• Supports children as they learn to advocate for themselves.
• Assists with the education of staff, students, and families with respect to health care.
• Other duties:
• Nursing Service Delivery: According to Nursing Practice Standards:
• Is available as a consultant to parents, teachers, administrators, and other appropriate staff to discuss issues around health-related concerns.
• Utilizes a solid knowledge base and skill in the understanding of human growth and development of children and adolescents.
• Participates in monitoring the quality and appropriateness of care.
• Serves as a resource for the development and implementation of the health education program.
• Maintenance of Records:
• Writes and maintains cumulative health record for each student, health office records, monthly statistics, and other reports and documentation consistent with nursing care/individualized health care plans/IEPs and Federal, State, and local mandates.
• Professional Development:
• Attends and participates in professional development programs and demonstrates willingness to update skills and practice.
• Coordinates and plans school programs with appropriate personnel. (CPR, kindergarten registration, athletic physicals, etc.).
• Other pertinent responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
