ICU Travel Nurse (RN) – Surgical/Trauma ICU Night Shift Contract in Charlottesville, VA

Experienced critical care Registered Nurse? Join a 15-bed Surgical/Trauma ICU in Charlottesville, Virginia, for a 13-week Level I travel nursing contract caring for complex surgical and trauma patients on the night shift.

Travel RN Job Details

• Specialty: Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit (SICU/STICU)
• Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Start Date: November 9, 2026
• End Date: February 8, 2027
• Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,770–$1,870
• Nursing Schedule: Night shift, 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.; typically three 12-hour shifts per week
• Hours: 36 hours per week; 48-hour schedules may be available based on unit needs
• Patient Population: Adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients
• Typical Assignment: 1 nurse to 2 patients, adjusted according to acuity
• Scheduling Requirements: Every other weekend and two of the three winter holidays
• Orientation: Approximately 24 hours
• Time Off: Up to 40 hours may be approved during the contract; requests should be submitted before acceptance

Surgical/Trauma ICU Travel Nurse Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license; Virginia license-pending candidates may be considered if the license is in hand by the Wednesday before the start date
• At least 2 years of recent SICU, surgical ICU, trauma ICU, or comparable critical care nursing experience
• Current BLS, ACLS, and TNCC certifications
• Recent Epic electronic health record (EHR) charting experience
• Demonstrated experience caring for critically ill surgical and trauma patients
• Strong patient assessment, prioritization, clinical judgment, and emergency response skills
• Trauma Level I or Level II experience preferred
• BSN preferred
• Ability to float within the Registered Nurse's scope of practice as needed

Critical Care RN Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to postoperative, complex surgical, and multisystem trauma patients requiring continuous monitoring and intervention
• Care for mechanically ventilated patients and manage BiPAP, CPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, and airway suctioning
• Titrate vasoactive infusions and manage continuous IV sedation according to patient condition and clinical protocols
• Monitor and interpret arterial blood gases, dysrhythmias, intracranial pressure, central venous pressure, and other critical care parameters
• Manage arterial lines, central lines, PICC lines, chest tubes, EVDs, and other critical care equipment within competency
• Administer blood products, TPN and lipids, procedural sedation, and prescribed medications safely
• Recognize and respond to multisystem organ dysfunction, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other life-threatening conditions
• Perform focused assessments, maintain accurate intake and output records, obtain 12-lead ECGs, and communicate changes in patient status promptly
• Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation, social services, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team
• Maintain infection prevention, isolation, documentation, and patient safety standards in a high-acuity critical care environment
