Electromechanical Controls Engineer (Electric Motor Specialist)

Overview The Aerospace Corporation is a federally funded research and development center that supports the nation’s space programs. We operate the Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) and the Electromechanical Control Department (ECD), which deliver innovative solutions for spacecraft, launch vehicles, and related systems. This role is an Electromechanical Controls Engineer within the ECD, focused on support of hardware used for spacecraft and launch vehicles. Location ElSegundo, CA. Requires at least four days onsite per week. Responsibilities Plan and conduct technical studies involving testing, evaluation, analysis, or simulation of control hardware components. Verify contractor designs, approaches, and overall system performance. Supervise and support experimental investigations in the Mechatronics Research Laboratory and other Aerospace labs, including performance evaluation of control sensors and actuators, controller design, implementation, and data reduction/visualization. Interact with government customers, program management, and contractors supporting multiple programs. Communicate results to internal and external stakeholders as a technical authority, consultant, primary investigator, or project leader. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field or equivalent. At least six years of professional or educational experience in laboratory experimentation, test strategy development, experiment design, and integration and testing. Strong working knowledge of electronics, mechanical design, control systems, inertial sensors, and actuators applicable to spacecraft and/or launch vehicles. Experience performing technical support in complex, multi‑program, multi‑agency environments involving customers, program offices, engineering support, and contractors. Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink, dSPACE, LabVIEW, SolidWorks, C/C++, and Python. Ability to travel up to 10% and to work non‑standard hours to meet customer demands. U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government‑issued security clearance (TS/SCI preferred). How You Can Stand Out Advanced degree in a STEM field or equivalent. Expertise in electric motors and drive electronics, specifically BLDC, servo, stepper, direct drive, and geared motors; experience with modeling, simulation, and testing. Expertise in electromechanical interface development, GPS receiver testing, space vehicle control electronics, avionics systems, electronic circuit design, laser communications, optics, signal processing, filtering, or real‑time software development. Familiarity with launch vehicle and satellite payloads and their control relationships. Demonstrated ability to provide innovative solutions to challenging technical problems. Experience mentoring and building a product team that maintains relationships with all levels of customer, corporate staff, and contractors. Experience identifying new business opportunities and leading projects from internal and external sources to your team. Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain TS/SCI clearance.
