GAI Consultants, Inc. is seeking a Geologist 3 in the Geotechnical Engineering Group in the Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Canton, Charleston, Bridgeport, or Richmond areas. This role will support projects in Energy, Transportation and Community Development business units. Travel and fieldwork are required throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia. Responsibilities Manage and perform engineering geology assignments, including subsurface investigations and geologic site characterization for a variety of facilities such as embankments, cut slopes, foundations, bridges, dams, retaining walls, transmission lines, buildings and other structures; design natural gas pipelines and compressor stations; design waste landfills and impoundments; develop geotechnical monitoring and laboratory testing programs. Monitor and log test borings, conduct site reconnaissance, install and monitor geotechnical field instrumentation, and select samples for laboratory testing. Perform earthwork construction monitoring and foundation inspection: interpret specifications and construction drawings, evaluate site conditions, monitor and report on construction activities, and perform field testing of soils. Prepare boring logs and geologic cross‑sections; assist with proposals, budgets, schedules, specifications and reports. Assist with geotechnical engineering designs, including rock/soil slope stability, cut‑slope and fill embankment design, shallow and deep foundation recommendations, and landslide remediation. Travel for fieldwork daily or weekly as required. Technical Responsibilities Lead field tasks from the field or office, collecting geotechnical and environmental samples, logging soil borings, installing monitoring wells, performing site inspections and compliance monitoring during construction. Write clear and concise field notes and prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports and illustrations. Contribute to technical reports and presentations explaining research and findings. Contribute to work plans for geologic and geotechnical engineering projects. General Characteristics Attention to detail; possess basic skills for geological/geotechnical investigations and construction monitoring; follow GAI procedures and data collection protocols; available for frequent travel and field work. Physical Requirements Candidate must be able to traverse steep terrain and carry up to 50 lbs. Minimum Years of Experience 5‑8+ years of experience Education B.S. or M.S. in Geology or Engineering Geology Certification / Licensure Professional Geologist (P.G.) License Valid driver’s license with no significant motor‑vehicle record blemishes Management Responsibility Receive and carry out general direction on key objectives. Receive guidance on unconventional/complex problems and new approaches. Assist with mentoring junior staff and reviewing work products. Attend project meetings and present specific aspects of geologic assignments. Demonstrate professionalism, creativity, curiosity and dependability. If assigned as direct supervisor, mentor, decide, resolve conflict, delegate tasks and lead as a role model. Communication Skills Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, to technical and non‑technical audiences. Identify and acknowledge teamwork and leadership principles. Interact primarily with internal project team members. Practice professionalism and respectful inclusion. Engage in stakeholder interactions.
