The Chief Safety Officer ( CSO ) for the University is the Director of Public Safety and serves as chief of police services. The CSO is responsible for overseeing the University’s Department of Public Safety, which includes the following operational divisions: University Police, Campus Security, Health Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, and the central administrative Office of the CSO . The Healthcare Security Supervisor is a hands‑on position where exceptional customer service is the top priority. This role ensures the safety and security of patients, staff, and visitors at multiple healthcare facilities associated with the University of Utah, including the University Medical Center, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Huntsman Mental Health Institute, and several regional health centers. Team members work under the direction of the University of Utah Chief Safety Officer in a dynamic 24/7 environment, with shifts during mornings, evenings, and overnight. Depending on location, employees may work 10‑hour or 13‑hour shifts, offering a schedule that provides ample days off and promotes a healthy work‑life balance. This role encompasses responsibilities in various areas, including a Level 1 trauma center setting, and provides opportunities to work in uniformed operations and patrol, dispatch, investigations, training, and risk assessment. Responsibilities Supervise the daily operations of the health security dispatch center to ensure efficient and timely response to emergencies and non-emergency calls for service. Lead, schedule, and manage dispatch personnel to ensure continuous 24/7 operational coverage and appropriate staffing levels. Receive, prioritize, and coordinate emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching security officers and emergency response teams as appropriate. Monitor security alarms, surveillance systems, communication networks, and emergency notification systems. Ensure accurate documentation of all incidents, dispatch activities, and communications in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements Coordinate emergency response efforts with healthcare staff, law enforcement, fire departments, EMS , and other external agencies. Provide leadership and decision-making support during critical incidents, emergency events, and high-volume situations. Review dispatch logs, incident reports, and performance metrics to identify trends and improve operational efficiency. Train, mentor, and evaluate dispatch personnel to ensure compliance with organizational standards and regulatory requirements. Conduct quality assurance reviews to maintain accuracy, professionalism, and customer service standards. Resolve operational issues, personnel concerns, and communication challenges in a timely manner. Ensure compliance with healthcare privacy regulations, security policies, and emergency management protocols. Maintain operational readiness of communication equipment, dispatch software, radios, and related technology by coordinating maintenance and reporting system issues. Answer and triage emergency and non-emergency calls from staff, patients, and visitors Operate and maintain proficiency with radio systems, telephone systems, dispatch software and security technologies Maintain working knowledge of hospital and clinic geography, unit designations, critical care areas and access routes Dispatch security personnel and coordinate response based on priority, location, and available resources Maintain real-time situational awareness of hospital operations, incidents, and officer activity across multiple facilities Monitor CCTV , alarms, access control systems, and life safety systems; initiate appropriate response Support emergency operations, including hospital codes, lockdowns, and critical incidents Serve as the central communication hub between security, clinical staff, leadership, and external emergency services Document incidents, dispatch activity, and communications accurately in CAD /dispatch systems Provide clear, concise radio and phone communication, including management of emergency radio traffic Follow established protocols for incident escalation, emergency notifications, and system downtime procedures Maintain professionalism, composure, and strong customer service in high-stress situations Ensure confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies Participate in required training, drills, and certification programs (including IAHSS Basic Certification)

Work Environment and Frequency Nearly Continuously: Exposure to infectious diseases (frequent contact with contagious or infectious conditions). Often: Working in office and outdoor environments; exposure to extreme temperatures (cold and heat), loud noise (requiring raised voices to communicate), animals, and atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation). Seldom: Exposure to oils or other cutting fluids through air or skin contact. Physical Requirements and Frequency Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, walking. Often: Sitting, repetitive hand motions (e.g., typing), bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, balancing, reaching overhead, pulling, pushing, and lifting items up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, lifting items over 50 pounds may also be required. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma, GED or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Five years’ related experience Ability to successfully pass a background check Demonstrated communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service A valid Utah Driver’s License to be obtained within 6 months of hire. A proficient knowledge and understanding of current electronic security equipment (proprietary alarms, CCTV systems, computers, etc.).
