Financial Accountant

Position Overview

Capitol Companies is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Financial Accountant to join our accounting and finance team. This mid-level role will focus primarily on corporate financial analysis, forecasting, reporting, and supporting business planning across the organization.

The ideal candidate will have a strong practical understanding of GAAP, solid analytical judgment, and the ability to translate financial information into useful insights for leadership and operational teams. This position will also support construction accounting and work closely with the construction department on project-related accounting and financial reporting.

While the role may provide occasional support to client accounting as business needs arise, the primary focus is corporate accounting, financial analysis, forecasting, and cross-functional support rather than day-to-day preparation of client financial packages.

Responsibilities

· Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual corporate financial reports in accordance with GAAP and company reporting requirements.

· Maintain and analyze general ledger accounts, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, prepaid expenses, and other adjusting entries.

· Perform financial analysis, including trend analysis, variance analysis, and review of key financial drivers.

· Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial projections to support business planning and management decision-making.

· Develop and maintain reporting that provides clear, actionable financial information to leadership and operational teams.

· Support construction accounting, including project cost tracking, financial reporting, and coordination with the construction department.

· Work cross-functionally with accounting, construction, property management, and leadership to improve the accuracy and usefulness of financial information.

· Identify unusual financial activity, investigate discrepancies, and recommend appropriate accounting treatment or corrective action.

· Support audit requests and prepare schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation as needed.

· Assist with special projects and ad hoc financial analysis as requested.

· Consistently prioritize competing responsibilities and meet monthly, quarterly, and year-end reporting deadlines.

· Use accounting systems, automation, and AI-assisted tools to improve efficiency, reporting, analysis, and problem-solving.
· Provide occasional support to client accounting when additional accounting expertise or coverage is needed.

Qualifications

· 3-5 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in property management, real estate, construction, or a multi-entity environment.
· Strong practical knowledge of GAAP and financial statement preparation.
· Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, projections, and financial analysis.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate issues and exercise sound judgment.
· Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills and the confidence to explain financial information to both accounting and non-accounting professionals.
· Technologically adaptable and comfortable learning new accounting and productivity tools.
· Comfortable incorporating AI and automation into accounting workflows where appropriate.
· Proficiency with accounting software and practical Excel skills for reporting, analysis, and tracking.
· Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.

Preferred Experience

· Construction accounting or project cost accounting experience.
· Property management, real estate, HOA, or condominium accounting experience.
· Experience working with multiple entities, departments, or business lines.
· Experience with CINC, Yardi, MRI, QuickBooks, or similar accounting systems.
· Experience using technology, automation, or AI tools to improve accounting and reporting processes.
· CPA license or CPA track is a plus but is not required.
