Registered Nurse (RN) Poison Information Specialist at Banner Health, Phoenix, Arizona. Hybrid remote arrangement available after a year of experience. 32 hours per week with 4–8 hour day shifts, two weekends every other month. Position Summary This position is responsible for triage and direct care of poison exposure cases received through a 24‑hour emergency telephone line. The incumbent provides accurate, evidence‑based management information to the public, healthcare providers, and emergency personnel. When a poisoning event occurs, the RN conducts a toxicological assessment, recommends a treatment plan, and documents and follows up to ensure a positive outcome. The RN also provides education to the public and professionals, participates in quality improvement projects, and serves as a liaison between the Poison Center and other healthcare providers. Core Functions Conduct accurate clinical assessments, develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans, modify plans to meet clinical outcomes, and document all nursing actions according to established policies and guidelines. Show respect for patient and family dignity and privacy, establish trust, and engage patients in care using multiple communication methods. Seek opportunities for personal growth in diversity training, provide culturally sensitive care, and ensure patient/family comfort. Document and code all calls using an online data collection system in accordance with AAPCC coding requirements and contribute to process improvement initiatives. Provide poison prevention education to the public and toxicology education to peers and other healthcare professionals through lectures and other knowledge delivery methods. Serve as a resource to staff and promote collegiality between physicians and leaders, participating in interdisciplinary teams and consulting within the organization and community. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing publications, building networks, and participating in professional societies. Coordinate patient placement and care regionally; interact with internal customers (nursing, medical staff, leadership) and external customers (patients, families, physicians, vendors, agencies). Minimum Qualifications Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Arizona (or a compact state). Minimum 3–5 years of recent clinical experience; prior experience in a Critical Care Unit, Emergency Department, or Poison Information Center preferred. May require American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) certification within 5 years of hire; re‑certification every seven years. Ability to use tact and diplomacy in exchanging complex information during crises. Thorough history‑taking skills and basic mathematical competence. Ability to prioritize incoming and follow‑up phone calls and function effectively under stress. Clear, compassionate verbal and written communication skills with confidentiality maintenance. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree preferred. Professional certification preferred. Additional related toxicology education and/or experience preferred.
