Build environments that directly impact patient care and community health. As a Sr. Construction Manager supporting Stanford Health Care's Palo Alto portfolio, you will help deliver complex healthcare projects that clinicians depend on every day.
This is a hands-on, onsite role based in Palo Alto, CA (not a people manager position). You will lead the day-to-day execution of multiple projects within active, highly regulated healthcare environments, ensuring work is delivered safely, on schedule, and on budget while maintaining operational continuity.
You'll serve as a key connector across internal teams, designers, contractors, and clinical stakeholders-translating plans into execution and proactively resolving issues in the field.
What you'll do
Alternative Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday
Lead day-to-day construction execution across multiple projects from planning through closeout
Work in collaboration with SHC Facilities Planning and Design, Facilities Engineering, Activations and Business Operations.
Drive coordination of safety programs including ICRA, PCRA, and ILSM in partnership with Environmental Health & Safety
Coordinate the planning, communication, impact assessment, and mitigation of utility shutdowns within an active hospital environment, ensuring uninterrupted patient care, regulatory compliance, stakeholder alignment, and implementation of contingency measures to minimize operational disruption and clinical risk.
Identify and resolve field issues quickly to maintain schedule and minimize operational disruption
Track and communicate project performance using tools such as PMWeb, Bluebeam, and PlanGrid
Provide clear, concise updates to leadership on scope, schedule, risks, and budget
Own day-to-day project execution, risk management, and stakeholder communication
Coordinate consultants, contractors, and internal partners to keep projects moving forward
Balance competing priorities while maintaining safety, compliance, and quality standards
Implement quality control measures, prepare organized and accurate project documentation for reporting
Success is driven by healthcare or complex construction experience, strong communication, and disciplined project leadership
What you'll bring
8-10+ years of construction/project management experience in healthcare or other regulated environments
Experience delivering projects from $50-$100M+ range
Experience working in or around OSHPD/HCAI projects strongly preferred
Working knowledge of PMWeb, Bluebeam, PlanGrid, MS Powerpoint and MS Office
Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate across diverse stakeholder groups

A Brief Overview
The Senior Construction Manager is an advanced individual contributor responsible for leading the planning, coordination, execution and financial control of multiple complex healthcare construction projects. This role provides expert owner's senior field representative, providing expert construction oversight while projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within approved budgets, and in compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements. This role specializes in advanced construction methods, complex site logistics, regulatory compliance, and resolution of unforeseen field conditions. The Senior Construction Manager drives operational excellence by enforcing standardized procedures, piloting new technologies and lean construction practices, improving cost, schedule and quality outcomes across construction projects. As a senior technical resource, this position provides guidance to Construction Managers, supports accurate forecasting and reporting, and ensures all cost-related actions are fully documented, auditable, and consistent with contract terms and departmental procedures. This role requires presence at multiple Stanford Health Care facilities and regular presence on active construction sites across the Bay Area to lead field execution, coordination, and compliance activities.

What you will do
Support General Contractor procurement for construction projects, including development of the Request for Qualifications and Request for Proposals from the General Contractors. Support of bid evaluation, scope alignment, cost comparisons, and documentation required for award and contract execution.
Lead advanced constructability reviews, sequencing analysis, and resolution of technical field issues, evaluating potential cost, productivity, and schedule implications and recommending mitigation strategies consistent with contract requirements.
Oversee field execution of multiple complex construction projects, ensuring compliance with approved contract documents, safety plans, infection control requirements, and regulatory authorities, while proactively managing cost, schedule, and scope impacts arising from field conditions.
Serve as a senior resource for schedule and cost recovery planning, reviewing CPM (Critical Path Method) schedules, cost-loaded activities, recovery schedules, and fragmentary schedule impacts associated with changes.
Conduct daily site walks, safety audits, quality inspections, and regulatory reviews, including preparing accurate and auditable field reports, cost-impact logs, and documentation required for compliance, billing, and dispute avoidance.
Provide senior oversight on project cost controls, including: administration and negotiation of change orders, potential change orders (PCOs), and field work directives (FWD)
In collaboration with Facilities Services Business Operations & Strategic Initiatives (BOSI), monitor and manage project cash flow, commitments, contingencies, and forecasted cost exposure, supporting accurate financial reporting and quarterly billing projections.
Coordinate directly with trade contractors, inspectors, testing agencies, and regulatory authorities to resolve technical, quality and compliance issues, ensuring timely resolution and minimizing rework, delay, and cost escalation.
Review and validation of contractor pricing, labor rates, markups, and backup documentation
In collaboration with Facilities Services Business Operations & Strategic Initiatives (BOSI), monitor not-to-exceed limits for time-and-material work and ensuring compliance with contractual cost provisions
Review, validate, and recommend approval of monthly payment applications, confirming percent complete through site verification, reconciling stored materials, ensuring required documentation is complete, and protecting the Owner's financial interests
Coordinate regulatory readiness and compliance activities (e.g., Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) and Office of Statewide Hospital Planning and Development (OSHPD) submissions, testing, inspection & observation (TIO) documentation, and coordination with the Inspector of Record (IOR)) to ensure documentation is organized and accessible for audits and surveys.
Under the supervision of the Facilities Services Sr. Director/Director of Construction, support quality assurance and quality control processes, including mock-ups, first-of-kind reviews, inspections, commissioning and activation; assist with packaging operations & maintenance (O&M) manuals, as-built drawings, warranties, training documentation, and other close out deliverables required for construction project turnover.
Develop, implement and enforce site logistics plans, temporary works, shutdown sequencing, and infection control barriers, ensuring operational continuity and documenting associated cost impacts, allowances or change requirements.
Partner with Facilities Management, Facility Field Services, Environmental Health & Safety, Infection Prevention, and Clinical partners on facility impacts
Lead post-construction and closeout activities, including commissioning, punch list completion, final inspections, reconciliation of final costs, warranty administration, and coordination of documentation required for final payment and acceptance.
Drive continuous improvement in field operations, cost controls, safety culture, and construction delivery methods by identifying systemic risks, inefficiencies, and cost drivers and implementing corrective actions.
Participate and lead in training related to construction practices, cost controls, safety protocols, regulatory requirements, sustainability initiatives, and innovative construction delivery methods as directed by construction leadership.
Pilot and evaluate new construction technologies and lean practices (e.g., drones, robotics, digital quality assurance (QA)/ quality control (QC) tools, assessing both operational benefits and cost effectiveness for field implementation.
Mentor and coach Construction Managers and field staff in construction procedures, cost management best practices, change administration, payment verification, and regulatory compliance.
Education Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required (construction management, engineering, architecture, or related field preferred).
Relevant experience in lieu of degree may be considered and is in addition to the experience requirements for this position.
Experience Qualifications
- Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible and directly related experience supporting construction projects, preferably in healthcare or other complex, occupied environments required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Advanced knowledge of construction means, methods, and sequencing in healthcare environments, including requirements and processes of the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI)/Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD).
Demonstrated expertise in site logistics, infection control, and field safety protocols specific to California healthcare construction.
Proven ability to independently resolve complex technical and regulatory challenges in the field, including unforeseen site conditions and compliance issues.
Strong proficiency with digital field tools and construction technology, such as mobile quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) applications, Building Information Modeling (BIM) for field use, drones, and robotics; ability to pilot and implement new technologies (artificial intelligence).
Deep understanding of Lean construction principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills; able to synthesize data and make sound, timely decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting, regulatory documentation, and stakeholder engagement.
Ability to mentor and train field staff and junior construction managers in technical best practices, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $70.52 - $93.43 per hour
