Custodian Position

The City currently has one (1) Custodian vacancy in the Public Works Department. Future scheduled salary increases: 5.0% increase effective July 1, 2026 and 5.0% increase effective July 1, 2027.

The Custodian position will perform a variety of custodial and building maintenance duties related to the cleaning and upkeep of assigned buildings and facilities; and to set up and remove tables, chairs and equipment for special events, activities and meetings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform general custodial duties in cleaning and maintaining assigned area; clean, sanitize and maintain assigned buildings, offices and restroom facilities; maintain proper standards of cleanliness in assigned areas.
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and buff floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets; operate equipment such as floor buffers, polishers, and vacuum cleaners.
  • Clean and disinfect lavatories, toilets and other plumbing fixtures; refill paper and other sanitary dispensers.
  • Dust and polish metalwork, woodwork, furniture and equipment.
  • Keeps records of work completed, including maintenance service logs.
  • Wash windows and walls.
  • Pressure wash exterior of building and surrounding areas, including walkways and patios.
  • Remove work-related hazardous waste materials; identify and label all chemicals used in the course of work in accordance to OSHA requirements.
  • Raise and lower flags and maintain flag and flagpole equipment.
  • Empty and clean wastebaskets, ash trays, and other receptacles; pick up and empty trash on facility grounds.
  • Assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment, and setting up areas or rooms for special events, activities or meetings; draw diagrams and instructions for room set-ups as necessary.
  • Paint walls and fixtures as assigned.
  • Remove litter, leaves, and debris from sidewalks, entryways, walkways, patios adjacent to buildings, and parking lots.
  • Lock and unlock doors; check security of assigned facilities.
  • Operate and maintain proper care of custodial equipment, materials and supplies in a safe and effective manner.
  • Drive City vehicle to run errands and to travel between various City facilities.
  • Assist with inter-office moves by moving furniture and equipment.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • As assigned, participate in supervision and training of part-time staff.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Education/Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing at a level necessary for successful job performance. Experience: Six months' custodial experience. License or Certificate: Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license. Physical Demands and Working Environment: The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Environment: Indoor and outdoor environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease and cleaning agents. Physical: Incumbents may require sufficient mobility for walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods of time; heavy, moderate or light lifting and carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling and climbing; operating motorized equipment; ability to regularly lift, pull, and carry weight up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read labels on cleaning equipment and supplies. Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
