Clinical Histology Technician - Histology (Frozen Section) - Mid-Shift

The Histology department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in transforming patient tissue specimens into high-quality materials that pathologists use to diagnose cancer and guide treatment decisions. The Frozen Section team supports time-sensitive surgical pathology services where accurate specimen handling, processing, and preparation are essential to providing physicians with timely information during patient care.

This Clinical Histology Technician position offers the opportunity to work in a specialized, fast-paced histology environment where technical skill, precision, and attention to detail directly support patient diagnosis. In this role, you will prepare histology materials using established departmental procedures while maintaining high technical and safety standards. You will support the full specimen workflow, including sorting, identifying, accessioning, and labeling specimens, blocks, and slides. You will also utilize laboratory informatics systems to accurately document workflow and track and identify patient materials throughout the process.

You will contribute to laboratory operations and quality by maintaining supplies, preparing reagents and solutions, and cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment. You will also review patient materials as part of the section's quality assurance activities, participate in quality control processes, and assist with evaluating and implementing new equipment, procedures, and techniques.

The position also provides an opportunity to contribute to team development and knowledge sharing by assisting with the training of new laboratory personnel. Strong communication, teamwork, and the ability to follow established procedures while maintaining a high level of accuracy are important to success in this role.

KEY FUNCTIONS

• Prepares histology materials using established departmental procedures and demonstrating high-quality technical skills. Performs all laboratory duties following established safety guidelines.

• Assists with all aspects of specimen processing including sorting, identifying, accessioning and labeling specimens blocks and slides. Uses laboratory informatics system to document workflow, track and identify specimens.

• Inventors' laboratory supplies and prepares reagents and solutions. Maintains and cleans laboratory equipment.

• Review patient material as part of section quality assurance and participates in laboratory quality control processes. Evaluates new equipment, procedures and techniques and participates in implementation.

• Assist in training new laboratory personnel.

EDUCATION

Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent

Preferred: Successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician program. or

Preferred: Associate's Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required: 3 years Histology Technician experience with required education. or

Required: 1 year Histopathology within the last ten years under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible) or an appropriately certified medical scientist, with Associate's degree. or

Required: With successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician program, no experience is required.
