Special Education Teacher – Transition Services
The Emma Louise House for Women is a residential transition program supporting young women ages 18–21 with unmet Individualized Education Program (IEP) transition goals as they prepare for greater independence in adulthood.
We are seeking a part-time Special Education Teacher to lead and deliver transition-focused instruction within our residential transition program. This role is designed for an educator who can translate IEP transition goals into practical, measurable learning experiences that strengthen independent living skills, employment readiness, self-advocacy, community participation, and preparation for adult life.
This is not a traditional classroom teaching position. It is an opportunity to apply special education expertise in a real-world, transition-focused environment where instruction connects directly to everyday independence.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Special Education Teacher will serve as a key instructional leader within the program, providing individualized transition-focused instruction and helping ensure educational services remain responsive to participant needs and identified IEP transition goals.
The teacher will use The Emma Louise House for Women's established six-month skills development program as the instructional foundation while applying professional judgment to individualize strategies, activities, supports, and learning experiences based on each participant's goals and progress.
The role also includes progress monitoring, documentation, collaboration, and instructional guidance to Transition Skills Coaches who reinforce participant goals and skill development across program and community-based settings.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead and deliver transition-focused instruction for young women ages 18–21.
• Translate relevant IEP transition goals into practical, individualized learning experiences and measurable skill-development activities.
• Implement The Emma Louise House for Women's established six-month skills development program while adapting instructional strategies and supports to participant needs.
• Provide real-world instruction in areas such as independent living, employment readiness, self-advocacy, routine development, community integration, and preparation for adult life.
• Develop or adapt instructional activities, strategies, and supports that promote meaningful participation and measurable progress.
• Monitor participant progress and maintain accurate, timely documentation related to transition goals, skill development, and outcomes.
• Review progress data and adjust instructional approaches when needed to support continued growth.
• Provide instructional guidance and coaching to Transition Skills Coaches who reinforce participant goals and skill development.
• Collaborate with program leadership, school district personnel, families or guardians, and other authorized stakeholders as appropriate.
• Participate in progress reviews, service planning, and coordination activities related to participant transition outcomes.
• Support consistency between individualized goals, planned instruction, real-world skill practice, and progress monitoring.
• Contribute to continuous program improvement while maintaining the integrity of the program's established transition-focused model.
• Maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and compliance with applicable program policies and service requirements.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Active teaching certificate or license with a special education endorsement.
• Experience supporting students or young adults with disabilities.
• Knowledge of Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes, transition planning, measurable goals, progress monitoring, and individualized instruction.
• Strong written communication, documentation, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• Ability to translate educational goals into practical, real-world learning experiences.
• Ability to work effectively in residential, community-based, and nontraditional instructional environments.
• Commitment to promoting dignity, self-determination, accountability, and increasing independence.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
• Experience working with transition-age students or young adults ages 18–21.
• Experience with secondary transition services, postsecondary transition planning, or school-to-adult-life programming.
• Experience providing community-based instruction, independent living instruction, employment readiness support, or functional life-skills instruction.
• Experience collaborating with school districts, IEP teams, families, or multidisciplinary partners.
• Experience guiding paraprofessionals, direct-support staff, skills coaches, or other team members who reinforce individualized goals.
POSITION DETAILS
• Position Type: Part-Time
• Location: Omaha, Nebraska
• Work Setting: Primarily in-person within a residential and community-based transition environment
• Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week, with potential for additional hours based on program needs and participant enrollment.
• Compensation: $35.00–$45.00 per hour, based on qualifications and relevant experience
