This is an opportunity to work on highly specialized engineering challenges while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across product development, manufacturing, and service.Job DescriptionRole OverviewWe are seeking an engineer with experience in cryogenic systems, thermal analysis, and hardware design to help lead the development and continuous improvement of superconducting magnet technologies used in MRI systems. This role combines hands-on engineering, analytical problem solving, design ownership, and cross-functional collaboration to support both new product development and our installed base of MRI systems worldwide.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and analyze cryogenic components and systems used in superconducting MRI magnetsPerform thermal and heat transfer analyses, including heat load calculations, heat budgets, and verification testingSupport the thermal and structural design of cryogenic hardware and assembliesDevelop, execute, and document verification and validation activities for cryogenic components and instrumentationAnalyze reliability and performance of cryogenic systems and componentsSupport manufacturing and production teams with cryogenic and vacuum system expertiseDrive initiatives to reduce cryogen consumption and improve system efficiencyInvestigate and resolve cryogenic, thermal, and vacuum-related issues impacting fielded MRI systemsConduct failure analyses and implement corrective actionsDevelop service tools and processes that support cryogen filling, maintenance, and safetyAnalyze installed base performance data to identify trends and drive product improvementsPrepare and present technical analyses, design reviews, and engineering reportsDevelop component specifications, test plans, and supplier requirementsLead engineering productivity projects focused on product cost and lifecycle cost reductionRequired QualificationsMaster's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, or a related engineering discipline, OR equivalent combination of education and relevant engineering experienceHands-on experience working with cryogenic systems or cryogenic componentsExperience designing, analyzing, or testing cryogenic systems, thermal systems, or liquid helium-based equipmentUnderstanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and thermal system behaviorExperience supporting hardware development, design validation, or product engineering activitiesPreferred QualificationsPhD in Thermal Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related fieldExperience with cryocooler technologies, including Gifford-McMahon refrigeration systemsExperience supporting superconducting magnet, MRI, aerospace, quantum computing, semiconductor, or other cryogenic applicationsExperience with high-vacuum systems, cryopumps, getters, and helium leak testingExperience with liquid helium and liquid nitrogen transfer systemsFamiliarity with cryogenic instrumentation and data acquisition systemsExperience evaluating material performance and machine design at cryogenic temperaturesExposure to cryogenic component manufacturing environmentsExperience using ANSYS, FEA, CFD, or related simulation toolsWhat Will Help You SucceedStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsAbility to translate complex technical challenges into practical engineering solutionsComfortable working in both hands-on laboratory and manufacturing environmentsStrong collaboration and communication skills across engineering, manufacturing, and service teamsContinuous improvement mindset with a focus on reliability, quality, and cost optimizationWhy Join GE HealthCare?You'll have the opportunity to work on highly specialized technologies that directly influence patient care around the world.
